Snake in need of good Home! I have had this snake for many years and he has been an excellent part of our family. He is great with people and dogs. He requires very little maintenance and although I would prefer him go to a home where he is handled and loved, he does not require much attention. He eats a large or medium rat from PetCo (about $7-9) every month or two and just needs fresh water and a clean cage. I provide the heat lamp and timer already set to his schedule as well as his heat rock (that helps with digestion and overall health and to keep him warm during the night) and a little shelter and some items for his cage that will help him shed and climb. I will be available to answer questions and provide resources if you come across any questions later on. Once you set up his cage, it’s smooth sailing. I recommend anyone who has never had a snake do some research online or get a book on having snakes as pets. To save time, and to see if this is something for you- I’ve given you almost all the information you need to know:
Why would I get rid of such an easy, cheap, beautiful pet? He’s a great snake and I’ve loved him a long time, all through school. I’m now married and planning a family. I think it’s best to focus on our two dogs and make room in our room for a crib rather than a big snake. He’s kind and quiet, and has been very cool to have when I was younger. I think a school aged child, college student, teacher, or reptile enthusiast would be able to give him a better home at this point.
Do you want to know more about him? He is a 7 foot Red Tailed Colombian Boa Constrictor. He is 20 years old and loves live rats and getting out for a stroll around the house now and then. He enjoys being handled for the exercise and the warmth. The Colombian Boa has an exotic appearance, and is considered by many to be the most beautiful of the constrictors. He has lived with a smaller female boa before when we took in someone’s snake for a year. He also lived with a larger ball Python of my brothers for some time; I think he would be fine sharing a large space with another big snake. He’s a mature male and has never been bred. My parents got him when he was a little baby snake about 2 feet long and we fed him pinkies then thawed out small mice. He has grown into a beautiful snake through care. He lived in a custom cage most of his life. His last home was almost the size of a refrigerator, though he should be fine with 2/3 that space.
How big will he get? His fast growing days are behind him. To keep a snake alive a long time, it’s best to feed them monthly and not give them too much food. If you want a 12 ft. Boa, buy a baby and feed it a lot weekly… this will NOT work with this snake. Feeding him too often or too large of prey (like rabbits) will shorten his life span and cause him undue stress on his body. Snakes that are over fed grow more as adolescents but do not live long, healthy, happy lives like this snake. The past few years, he has grown about an inch or two a year.
