Made in USA 1990 Cannondale SR600 Criterium 3.0 Road Race Handmade Heat Treated Aluminum frame with custom SANTE groupset: Original models were Shimano 105 equipped.

HISTORY OF THE 3.0:

The 3.0 took Cannondale into computer-optimized, ultra-stiff and light design. Cannondale wanted to use the relatively new carbon-fiber to create an ultra-light frame. A Stanford-educated engineer was hired who first optimized their existing aluminum frame as a point of reference for the new carbon frame. He found that an optimized- design aluminum frame reduced weight over 1 lb. at a cost of a few dollars more than the existing aluminum model, concluding that a carbon-fiber frame held no stiffness or weight advantage over the optimized aluminum frame. The carbon-fiber frame program was scrapped in favor of the 3.0.

The 3.0 was first offered in two versions: the 3.0 Criterium SR600 and the 3.0 Road Race. The Criterium was dropped around 1992. Unique to the 3.0 were cantilevered chainstays. By mating the seatstay with the chainstay about an inch forward of the dropout, the rear trianger was smaller, saved weight and added stiffness. The 3.0 frame was one of the first to have a replaceable rear derailleur hangar, designed to break away and easily replaced in the event of a crash, sparing the frame. Starting in 1988, the decal was affixed to the top tube. Cannondale began affixing the decal to the downtube on later models (apparently 1990 as on this bike). The 3.0 (and the later 2.8 R2000) were state-of-the-art (classics today).
