We all like to see a perfect drive right down the middle. But few amateurs can drive this way consistently. We have a lot of trouble with good driving, and a good drive is essential if you want to get to a location you can score from.

To arrive at this point 3 things must seriously looked at. (1.) You must have good control of the club head. Having the right grip is a necessity. Check your grip first before driving, and make sure that it is correct and consistent. You need to be skilled in controlling the driver's face, so as to hit the ball to the right or the left as you want to. Controlling the ball in this manner will include the ability to hit straight ahead when you want to.

(2.)You really must have good rotation from your hips and your shoulders. To get the power you want you must turn your body away from the ball as far as you can during your backswing. Then you must rotate forward and right through the ball at impact, and keep on turning right through the finish of your swing.

(3.) Rythm is absolutely necessary to get good accuracy and real distance. You must never start off the down swing with a jerking motion-- rather always with a really smooth swing. Count under your breath "one two three" during the backswing and with go on with "four five six" on your down swing so as to keep it rythmic.

A method which can help, is to practice swinging with a short iron and with the driver alternately. Most of us have a natural tendency to a smooth swing with a short iron, so try to maintain the same smooth swing when you switch over to your driver. Alternate back and forth between a short iron, such as the 9, and driver till you can keep the same smooth swing with both.

Driving is one important key to a lower score for all of us. The really essential part of good driving is a rythmic and smooth swing. Accuracy is the target and when this has been achieved distance will not be a problem. A smooth 200 yard drive which is well placed on the fairway is far superior to a longer drive that ends up in the rough.
