Abusing alcohol and other drugs carries risks and problems that often have detrimental effects on victims and people close to them, and sadly it is an extremely prevalent condition. In addition to familial issues, when someone experiences alcohol and drug problems, the negative effects of abusing these substances has a major impact on their health, career, and relationships with friends and the community. Alcohol misuse and drug misuse may vary, but they frequently are related, and this is the reason they are usually grouped together.

Drug abuse includes the use of illegal recreational drugs such as marijuana, meth, cocaine, ecstasy, heroin, acid, or other street drugs, and the abuse of prescription drugs. Some people abuse drugs to get a "high" and to deal with emotional problems and relieve stress, which can often result to drug dependency or addiction. Drug dependence or addiction occurs when a person develops the need for a drug so that they can constantly sustain their high. Drug dependency can be physical or psychological with physical drug addiction, the body has become used to experiencing an increased measure of a substance and it undergoes withdrawal as the level decreased than what it is accustomed to and with psychological drug addiction, a person is emotionally dependent on a substance and deem they have a need for it to be able to work. People suffering from drug dependency are unable to control the use of a drug despite the negative impact it has on their life.

Alcohol abuse is a pattern of drinking in binge or constant use for more than a period of time that involves large quantities of alcohol. People who drink excessively has been linked to engaging in high risk sex, having poor grades or job performance, smoke tobacco, and experiment with illegal drugs. Alcohol can be dangerous when illegal drugs and prescription medications are taken. Prolonged heavy drinking can damage the liver, heart, brain, and nervous system, and can result to other physical problems such as stomach ache, sexual dysfunction, and osteoporosis. Alcohol abuse can also cause behavioral problems that can lead to having trouble with law such as violence and drunk driving.

Drug and alcohol abuse doesn't only affect abusers themselves. It can be heartbreaking for family and friends to witness someone they love experience drug addiction, and people close to the victim might feel guilty for not having prevented it or recognized the signs. But family and friends can have a great impact in getting drug abusers on the road to recovery. Drug and alcohol abuse is very dangerous, and it's an issue that requires immediate intervention. It's important that victims recognize they have a problem and seek help as soon as they can. It can be difficult to recover from substance abuse, but treatment is available and addiction recovery is possible.
