Gaga performed "Born This Way" for the first time at the 53rd Grammy Awards on February 13, 2011. She arrived to the awards ceremony in a giant incubating vessel that was carried by numerous fashion models, and she later emerged from it on stage for her performance. The mergence from the incubator symbolized her 'rebirth.' During this performance, Gaga incorporated a short improvisation based upon the famous organ music Toccata and Fugue commonly attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach. She was encased in a translucent material that was said to be an embryo, which she came out of on stage during the beginning of her performance. She was dressed in a nude-colored outfit with noticeable protrusions coming out of her face and shoulders. Towards the end of the performance, she began playing an organ before singing the end of the song. |
