Rug beaters are one of the best ways to extend the life of your rugs. The normal habit is to toss a rug in the waher, or get the carpet shampooer out at the first sighting of soil.
Our ancestors didn't have our present day luxuries but they had the ingenuity to create some really good rug beaters. The rug was placed on a fence line or porch railing and rapidly beat until no more dust flew! It was good to go for at least another week. When wash day came it was because there simply wasn't another beating going to get it clean. Spring and Fall were the normal times those old time rugs got a wash tub cleaning. Rug beaters we purchase today are more decorative than the old time ones. The one above is very old and similar to my grandmothers beater. The ones below are modern day rug beaters. You can find one at all different prices whether antique, vintage or brand spankng new! Come visit us at Old Time Rugs and see for yourself. |
