When to Consult Your Dentist
It's important that we visit our dentists at least once every six months, but there are other times we should make an appointment to sit in that chair. Other than routine cleanings, there are other times people need to frequently visit their dentists. Knowing the difference between what can wait and what should be treated immediately can make a big difference in the look of your smile, the health of your mouth and the amount of your dental bills. How do you know when it's the right time to go in for a visit?

The most obvious answer for when individuals should visit their dentists, of course, every six months for a routine cleaning. This way you can head off a majority of the problems that will cause you to have to go back to his office during those months in between. Very few people actually look forward to these visits but they are important in order to avoid some of the other problems that can arise if your teeth and gums aren't properly maintained. X-rays and exams are crucial to the overall health of your mouth.

Even if you go every six months, there will be times when you might have to go a separate time or two. Should you have a tooth ache, it's probably in your best interest to visit your dentist. A tooth ache is a warning sign that something is not right. Don't tell yourself that you can just bare the pain in order to avoid a more invasive procedure such as a root canal. The truth is, if you go into his office at the first sign of a problem you might be able to avoid the more invasive procedures later. If the tooth ache is accompanied by a fever, visit your doctor immediately, as this could be a sign of an infection. If you can't get into your dentist, visit with your regular physician to get an antibiotic in order to control the infection.

A chipped tooth is also another reason you should see your dentist in between checkups. A chipped tooth can lead to other problems. Bacteria can get into the crack and cause a cavity. This can also lead to infections and loss of tooth if left untreated for a long time. While it might not be worth going to your doctor after hours over, it is something that should be dealt with sooner rather than later.

Going to the dentist might not be high on your list of fun things to do with an afternoon, but it is something that needs to be done. Going for your regular six month cleaning and exam will greatly improve the overall health of your teeth and gums.

You should also heed the warning signs that your body gives you. Aches and pains are not normal parts of a healthy mouth and should be addressed quickly to help avoid larger issues down the road.
