Step 1: Dig the hole

Pick the perfect spot with full or partial sunlight and with moist or well drained soil. Dig the hole so it is shallower than the root ball and at least twice the width. Loosen the soil in the planting hole so the roots can easily break through. Drag the point of a shovel along the sides and bottom of the hole.

Step 2: Place the tree

Next, separate the roots of the Empress Royal Paulownia Tree. Do this gently with your fingers and position them downward facing the hole. The top of the root flare, where the roots end and the trunk begins, should be about an inch above the surrounding soil. Make sure the tree is vertical in the hole.

Step 3: Backfill the hole

While backfilling, apply water to remove air pockets. Remove debris like stones and grass and break up any dirt clumps. Water the Empress Royal Paulownia Tree after the transplant is complete. To help retain some of that moisture, place mulch around each tree to a depth of 2"-3" up to but not touching the trunk.
