Normal Blood Glucose Levels And Diabetic Blood Sugar Levels
If your blood glucose or blood sugar level is outside the normal range you have a problem which may be diabetes.
Normal blood glucose levels in your bloodstream are required in order to provide the energy your body needs. Glucose, also known as blood sugar is produced when carbohydrates are consumed. Blood sugar levels, are determined by insulin which is a hormone produced by the pancreas.
Normal blood glucose levels are from 70 to 150 mg. Blood sugar levels which are above 150mg. are considered to be high blood sugar which is known as hyperglycemia. Low blood glucose levels which are below 70 mg. are called hypoglycemia, which is a serious and possibly fatal condition necessitating medical treatment. High blood sugar levels if persistent can lead to diabetes. Diabetes is a very serious condition which can result in kidney, eye and nerve damage and may be fatal if not treated regularly.
When diabetes is suspected Your physician will order a blood glucose level test. A fasting blood glucose test is carried out following eight hours without eating any food. This is the first method used to look for possible diabetes. An optimal result is between 70 and 99mg to be in the normal range. The next test which is done two hours after eating a meal should optimally result in blood glucose levels which are in a range of 70 to 150mg. for normal readings. Random testing which is done throughout a day regardless of meal times should produce results which are between 70 and 125mg. to be normal.
An oral glucose tolerance test is carried out to find what your tolerance for glucose is. You will take a glucose drink a little time before testing and any result not in the normal range will point to possible diabetes.
Blood glucose levels can as a matter of fact be influenced by many different things so one test which is abnormal is not enough to make a conclusive diagnosis. Results may sometimes also vary depending on the lab which handles the tests.
