any other condition should prompt you to see a gynecologist for an exam. Women
who have a family history of ovarian cancer may want to be tested of genes with
which it has been associated. Routine pelvic exams can detect a hardened or
enlarged ovary or an ovarian growth, while pap smears are not very useful in
detecting this. A tumor may also show up on a transvaginal ultrasound. A biopsy
is needed to confirm any suspicions. Researchers are studying the possibility
of developing a blood test to detect ovarian other gynecological cancers.
Levels of lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), a substance found in the blood, seem to
rise consistently in women who have ovarian cancer. This may provide a basis
for a blood test in the future.
