Forerunner 301 Rated 4 out of 5 stars by 256 Amazon customers
While the improved satellite reachability and interplay with the Forerunner 305 and Forerunner 405 is talked up, the Forerunner 301 works just fine. They all experience issues in ares where the sky is consistently obliterated, and the Forerunner 305 and Forerunner 405 are 2 to 3 times as costly. This is explained as S.O.P. in the Forerunner 301 manual, as well as the more costly models. (The Forerunner 301 is the upgrade from the Forerunner 201 / Forerunner 205.)
In some areas where the sky is blanked out (skyscrapers, bad weather, etc.) you may notice some minor issues with the Garmin 301, as I mentioned above. However, as soon as you link back up you are right where you need to be, and the unit loses no info. The lithium battery also has a very long life.
The Forerunner 301 is also 100% to 200% less expensive than the 305 and 405, has the forerunner 301 heart rate monitor option, and does basically the same things, logs your workouts and allows you to upload workouts to your forerunner 301 as well. The forerunner 301 is a great starting unit to catalog all your workouts and use as a gps, as I learned in this Garmin Forerunner 301 review.
