St. Louis CFO ’s – A little goldmine your IT department is hiding from you!

If you are like most CFO’s you probably spend a lot of money in your IT department. Why wouldn’t you? PC’s are always faster and better once replaced. Servers always hit the wall sooner than later. Obsolescence is real and costly for sure.

But one piece of technology does not become unsuitable for use. These are your backup power units.





Uninterpretable power supplies are pretty dull, reliable surge and power protection devices and if you are a mid-sized or larger business, you may have hundreds of these.

The good news is you don’t need to replace them because something flashier has come alone. These products last major upgrade was to connect them to the network for monitoring. That was added more than 10 years ago. So if your IT guys have been wise, you have a fleet of backup power that will meet your needs for a very long time with proper maintenance.

If you get up and go looking you are very likely to find the stash of abandoned backup power units that were stacked up and forgotten once the batteries failed.




Likewise you can probably easily determine the money spent on new APC or Tripp Lite or Liebert backup power units purchased to rep:lace those in the IT boneyard.

If you ask, “why don’t we repair the UPS units in the bone yard, you might hear “we don’t have time”. We can’t rely on a old UPS” and similar.

I have facilitated restoration of thousands of old UPS backup power units. Here is the results I have seen:

1. Exchanging batteries is both fast and easy.
2. It rakes about 15 minutes and can be done quicker if restoring a batch of them.
3. Batteries can be easily and completely recycled.
4. Fresh batteries have a probability of successful restoration of nearly 100%.



5. Proper, legal disposal of the re-powered unit is pushed out significantly since it will be happily protecting your systems instead of buried in a landfill.
6. System life will be boubled. If the unit has operated for 5 years, it is likely that it will operate for that duration again, once restored.
7. Cost saving s for a mid sized 1500 watt UPS is $265 per unit re-powered shish. Based on new unit cost $350 and replacement pack and shipping = $85 or so. If you are like many, and find stacks of these abandoned backup units, you can easily see the opportunity.



So look around… See if you don’t find this is worth poking a stick at.

If the IT group is not interested, let the person who cleans your office fix them. It’s easy and might make for an interesting staff meeting with your CIO!!
