Muhammad Ali signed photograph defeating Sonny Li

Muhammad Ali signed photograph defeating Sonny Li

Arguably the most famous sports photograph of all time - signed by Muhammad Ali! Huge Photograph Signed "Muhammad Ali" in blue Sharpie. Black & white, 28.75" x 23.25" visible, double matted in blue and white to 35" x 29.5". Ali has penned "To" and an indecipherable name beginning with "B", and, on the next line, "from" above his signature. Beneath it he's added the year which appears to be "2008."

Fine condition. Standing imperiously over the defeated Sonny Liston, World Heavyweight Champion Muhammad Ali seems to be yelling at the former champion to get up. It only took one minute 42 seconds of the first round for Ali to win his first bout defending the title he had won from Liston 15 months earlier. The photograph was taken by "Sports Illustrated" photographer Neil Leifer. In a 2002 published interview with Chris Maher and Larry Berman, Leifer talked about the Ali-Liston fight held at St. Dominick's Arena in Lewiston, Maine, on May 25, 1965:

"Well, I was lucky. I don't want to sound like I'm just being modest about it. Most good photographers I know, sports or any other kind, have pretty healthy egos and I'm certainly no exception to that. But sports photography is a matter of being in the right place. You've got to be in the right seat.

A great example is to the Liston Ali picture. The photographer you see between Ali's legs is Herbie Scharfman, the other Sports Illustrated photographer. It didn't make a difference how good he was that night. He was obviously in the wrong seat. What the good sports photographer does is when it happens and you're in the right place, you don't miss. Whether that's instinctual or whether it's just luck, I don't know." Spence LOA ... Edited for formatting purposes. More information is always available.
