You can't get anymore basic (or essential) then the Shure SM57 when it comes to a dynamic microphone that you absolutely need to have in your home recording studio.
One of the great things about the SM57 is that it's extremely durable so you can often find a great deal on used SM57's that are just as good as a new one as far as recording quality (which is what it's all bout, isn't it?)
