Von Doane's Kandu Destiny Story
I’ll reveal the unusual childhood experience I had that led me down the path to my interest of uncovering information, and why it was Destiny waiting in the wings that I became what I am today... an InfoProvider! All my life... since I was 6 years old and could read and comprehend what I was reading... I have conscientiously collected information... on things that interested me... things that I wanted to learn "how to" do... or "how to" do better. At six years old I knew how to read but I wanted to read better (Got My Wish!)... I wanted to print better... a few years latter I wanted to write better... I wanted better penmanship (Got It!)... and I wanted to draw like an artist (Haven't Gotten It... Not Yet:-). But my grandson Khary has been a paid and public published artist in his Township since he was 11 years young (He Got It!). He designed a community flag for his township. The township community flag hangs at his town's public library, school, community center and is displayed in many of his neigbors yards. I am very proud of him! His art and poetry awards are very inspirational to me... maybe one day... I will get my my art wish fulfilled, too... In the meantime... I am enjoying my wish vicariously through his success.
My original sources for me to browse and collect my information was from the home delivered Sunday Philadelphia Enquirer and the City of Philadelpia, Pa and Camden, N.J. major weekly newspapers... The Philadelpia Daily News (my father's favorite newspaper) and The New Jersey Courier Post (my mother's favorite newspaper)... Local Community Newspapers... monthly magazines... Time Life... Reader's Digest and Jet (every African American Family... that I knew at this time had a subscription to Jet Magazine) and match book covers!
Yes... you read right... match book covers! At this time in my life... my mother smoked... on and off from around 1963 to 1970. I don't know how many of you will know or even remember... during the 1960's the match book covers were free... and very colorful designs on the outside and on the back of the old match covers that accompanied ever pack of store purchased cigarettes was always an advertisement for a "send away offer"... for a special report. Some offers were free... most offers required .25 cents. I remember... pulling the matches out from the stapple and trying to print and latter write real... real little to fit my name and address on the small lines and space provided... on the inside of the match cover. Then fold and wrap plain paper neatly around my quarter... which I got from my allowance... before placing the quarter and the match cover in an envelope to be mailed. Usually... about 4 weeks latter sometimes 6 weeks latter I would received a 8 x 10 business envelope address to me with my 1 or 2 Page Type Printed Report.
My mother who was my life's teacher... advisor and life coach would let me know I had mail. As I type this... in my mind... I can see my mother's eyes and the expression on her face.. and heard her voice... when she call my name and told me...I had mail. She would be curious and wait patiently for me to open "My Report" and read it aloud to her. We would have a conversation and discuss the "Report" information and details. I recall... some reports actual gave good tips... information... about writing or becoming an artist and sometimes a coupon to get a discount on an upgraded offer or other offers... like monthly children series books. I am sure... I was the only kid on our street getting personal addressed mailed. Now... in restropect that I think about it... I am laughing... I am sure my mother thought my fascination for her match book covers and me clipping "How To Offers" from our home newspapers and magazines and spending my allowance to collect "Reports" an odd and unusual hobby for a young child to acquire.
As you can see.. I have been interested in finding "how to information" for a real long time... I review and reveal my life's information achievements with pride. I recognize and know value when it is delivered and when I see it. I, also, know the value of responding to " a good offer" or "a mail report offering".... I seen the price rise from .25 cents in the 60's... to a $1.00 in the 70's... to $5.00 in the 80's and 90's to "Free Offers" and $10.00 and higher Online Digital Report Offers Now.
