Big Misconceptions About Network Marketing
5 Big Misconceptions About Network Marketing
Let’s face it: network marketing is BIG ! –If you look in the right places. Robert Kiyosaki calls it “the perfect business”. Donald Trump and Warren Buffett are aligning themselves with network marketing opportunities. Harvard business school is even teaching on the subject. So why is it that so many people operate their network marketing businesses as if they're still in the stones ages ? And while network marketing is growing larger than ever as a whole, there are a number of misconceptions about MLMs that hurt people’s businesses and need to be overcome. Misconception About MLM #1 This really isn't sales, we just share information. Maybe the biggest misconception about MLMs: that its all about selling. However the opposite can also be true- people shy away form this aspect-perhaps it sounds so much better to not be involved in sales right ? But here’s the thing: any good business has a sales department, in some form or fashion. They have to make money at some point no ? And marketing is part of sales. There are a lot of ways to look at this and go over semantics about what constitutes sales or not but I don’t want to get into that. I just like to look at it like this: if you're in network marketing YOU are now in charge of your own personal franchise that you can choose to manage how you want, and build up or run into the ground however you want. YOU are in charge of all the different departments- HR, training, development, marketing and yes, sales. If you choose not to focus on sales, that is fine- you just better recruit a lot of people who do. However, if you learn to market properly, you can then drive customers and clients to YOU which is a much more pleasant and professional experience. Misconception #2 Everyone is your prospect. Of the all the misconceptions about MLM out there, this one is the most damaging to this industry and to ourselves. It destroys your reputation as a professional. When we are practicing such things as "the three foot rule" just ends up making us look like a carny trying to get someone close enough to guess their weight or play that rigged game with the huge hammer. Desperate. No one likes desperate, and no one does business with desperate. Realize that not everyone is your prospect! Some people like working for someone else. Some people do not want to start their own business and most are unable or unwilling to change. It’s ok. You can’t ‘save’ people. Just don’t waste your valuable time and effort on the ones who don't want it for themselves. Focus on the ones who do. Make sure before you invest your time in people they have an interest in your opportunity and what you have to offer. Misconception #3 Anyone can do it. There is in fact some truth to this. Anyone with the proper marketing training can learn to do this. But, not everyone is willing to learn what is needed for success. This mindset also helps perpetuate common misconceptions about MLMs and why so many people end up discouraged by their experience. While certain jobs have more of an immediate relevancy for this type of business ( i. e. sales ), someone who takes the time to get and learn the proper training has a great chance at succeeding. This will take more training than you can get from your company. You need to learn marketing skills. Most companies teach you about their product, which is fine. They teach you how to "show the plan". What they don't teach and you need to learn is how to market yourself. Network marketing opportunities are everywhere now. People want to join something only if they believe it has a substantial chance of bringing them success as well. And they will join someone they believe can help them reach their goals. In the end it is about them , though the product certainly has some to do with it. It is a huge misconception about MLM that unfortunately exists telling people to basically go around swinging blindly and hope to catch flies. This type of business takes concentrated effort-and skilled effort. Most network marketing business do not offer the sort of training you need for your business to truly be successful. You’re taught to just hand out brochures and always, always talk to more people about your opportunity. This just ends up making you and your business look more unprofessional . Misconception About MLMs #4 We’ve Got This There exist a certain amount of ads and programs out there that promise for a fee they will build a downline for you. I’ve also seen this done as kind of co-op, where everybody decides to join ahead of time BUT THEY DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT COMPANY THEY ARE JOINING !! How can you be committed to a company when you don’t even know what it is ? But even the co-op idea holds more promise to me than a program that says they’ll do everything for you. These types of programs essentially promise a lot for nothing. And while I haven’t personally signed up for one, I just find it a little too good to be true, as this sort of thing usually is. Having had my own business, I understand to have a flourishing business, one must put in time and effort to make it work. There are many ways to automate yourself and make things easier, but there are no big shortcuts. You either have to put in time or money, or both to make your business grow. Of course you don’t have to take my advice and can try one of these systems-I’d actually love to hear how it turns out. But I wouldn’t hang your hat on this building a big business for you. Misconception About MLM # 5 My Product is the best product ever. You may indeed have a wonderful product. In fact, you probably do- there are a ton of fantastic products and services out there. But if you’ve studied attraction marketing at all or read some of my other posts – one thing is clear: it really does not matter how great all theses products are. It matters how you market. Without a quality marketing system in place, your awesome product will end up gathering dust in the basement. People then often want to say “ well you haven’t seen our compensation plan, which is the best thing since glazed donuts.” You’re right . Doesn’t matter- if your marketing is no good.
