6 Tips for Designing Your First Website

I've been designing websites for almost 15 years, so when someone asks me how to design one, it's hard for me to not get all complicated on them. I recently read an article in Entrepreneur Magazine which summed up 6 key points in designing a website. In fact, these design factors are meant to be applied to each page of the site - not just the home page.

Here they are:

Your company's logo and descriptive tagline
A website search tool and consistent navigation so that visitors can easily get around the site
A call to action (what do you want the visitor to do?) both above and below the first fold of the web page
Website content that is interesting, to-the-point and free of grammatical errors (did I spell that right?)
Make layout, design and colors match your brand and make them consistent throughout the site
Include featured products, special offers or relevant ads where applicable

There are so many low-cost and easy-to-use website makers on the market today, that it's not unrealistic for a small business owner to put one together him or herself. If you are on a budget with a little extra time, you can test drive website makers for free for a week or two to see if it's something you'd like to do.
