Dogue de Bordeaux

The Dogue de Bordeaux is also known as a Bordeaux Mastiff,French Mastiff or Bordeaux dog.The Bordeaux is a large french mastiff breed and is one of the most ancient French dog breeds.

A typical brachycephalic Molossoid type breed, the Bordeaux is a very powerful dog with a very muscular solidly built body.Molossers typically have heavy bones, pendant ears,a relatively short,well-muscled neck and a short broad muzzle. The massive head is a crucial breed characteristic, the Dogue de Bordeaux is claimed to have the largest head in the world in proportion to the rest of the body.

The Bordeaux has a good and calm temperament and is extremely loyal, patient and devoted to his/her family, while fearless and confrontational with strangers.Despite the Bordeauxs fearsome appearance the Dogue de Bordeaux is gentle with children and family members. However this is a powerful animal and is not suitable for an inexperienced dog owner.

History of breeding purposes:
This breed served as a war dog, cattle herder, guard dog, pulling and hauling heavy carts and objects as well as hunting boar and protecting flock against wolves, bears and jaguars.A lot of the Dogue de Bordeauxs died during the French Revolution.

The Dogue de Bordeaux was known in France as early as the 14th century, particularly in Southwest France in the region around Bordeaux, hence the city lent its name to these large dogs. The Bordeaux breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 2008,there are only 3,000 Dogue de Bordeauxs in the United States.
In 1863 the first canine exhibition was held at the "Jardin d'Aclimation" in Paris,France, the winner was a female Dogue de Bordeaux named Magentas. The Dogue de Bordeaux was then given the name of the capital of its region of origin, today's Dogue de Bordeaux.
