Most commonly known as the Thai Galangal, Blue Ginger, or Thai ginger, this plant belongs to the ginger family and is mainly used in cooking, especially in the Thai cuisine. Alpinia Galanga naturally grows in Indonesia and is being cultivated in other parts of Asia. It is characterized as stiff stalks that grow up to two meters in heights and bear red fruit. This red fruit is popularly used by the Chinese people for medicinal purposes, while the rhizomes are used for flavoring because of their strong taste and smell that resemble pine needles and black pepper.In addition to their culinary purposes, the rhizomes of Alpinia Galanga are used for the treatment of common skin infections such as eczema and ringworms. In some parts of Tamil, this herb is used as a folk cure to colds and sore throats.It is believed to have anti tuberculosis properties, but they are yet to be tested and put into use. Some studies about Alpinia Galanga did show that it weakens the effects of malaria in mice, which implies that the herb can be used for a wider variety of treatments than it is nowadays.
