The Omron HBF-306C Body Fat Analyzer measures your body fat with a gentle, micro electrical current -- don't worry, you won't feel it. The key to long-term exercise success is accurate body fat composition measurement. This handheld body fat analyzer is an affordable and easy way to measure your body fat in the privacy of your own home. After inputting the data, a measurement can be started by simply holding the grip electrodes and pressing the start button. And since the analyzer is built with a nine person profile memory, each member of your family or team can track the success of their individual exercise routines.
The HBF-306C features two modes -- athlete and normal -- for accurate results. The device is a breeze to use, and it returns measurement results in seven seconds for both Bi method (Bioelectrical Impedance Method) and BMI (Body Mass Index). The unit displays the measured value of your body fat percentage through the BMI method, and indicates the body mass in for ranges from low, normal, high, and very high according to the BMI value.
What is the Bioelectrical Impedance Method?
Muscles, blood vessels and bones are body tissues having a high water content that conduct electricity easily. Body fat is tissue that has little electric conductivity. The Body Fat Analyzer sends an extremely weak electrical current of 50 kHz and 500 ľA through your body to determine the amount of fat tissue. This weak electrical current is not felt while operating the Body Fat Analyzer. The Bioelectrical Impedance Method safely combines the electric resistance with the distance of the electricity conducted. Correct posture and consistent measuring conditions need to be maintained for the best results.
Operating the Analyzer:
To use the HBF-306C you must first set your personal datYou must first select between the Normal and Athlete modes. To determine if you should select Normal or Athlete, you must calculate your FIT index by using the following formula:
FIT Index = Frequency x Intensity x Time
Frequency is a single digit number from one to five that represents your frequency of exercise. If you exercise daily or almost daily, then use the number five: three to four times per week use four: one to two times per week use three: a few times per month use two: and for less than once a month use one. If you workout vigorously, then you use the number five to represent your intensity level: if you workout with moderate or light effort, use the number four.
Meanwhile, time is a single digit number from four to one that represents the duration of your workout. If you exercise for 45 minutes or more, then use the number four: 30-44 minutes use three: 15-29 minutes use two: and for less than 15 minutes use one. For example, if you run five times a week for 30 minutes, your FIT index would be 75 (5 x 5 x 3 = 75) and you would select the Athlete setting. If your FIT index is greater than 60, you should select the Athlete setting. Any number below would demand a normal setting.
After determining your FIT index and selecting between the Athlete and Normal setting, the remaining personal data is very straightforward. Simply enter your height, weight, age and gender. When all the data is fixed and stored, the analyzer screen will display "Ready," and you'll be ready to take your first body fat measurements.
Note: For the following cases, the body fat percentage measured by this unit may significantly differ from the actual body fat percentage.

What is the Bioelectrical Impedance Method?
Bioelectrical Impedance (BI) is considered one of the most accurate and accessible methods of screening body fat. I am comparing it against other methods right now, but it seems to be nearly as accurate as any other method. However it becomes much less accurate at competition leanness, that being below 15% body fat...or at low body water points in your training.
One advantage of the HPF 306 Body Fat Tracker is that you can use it without anyone else to help.
I have used a many tools over the decades and for the price...this sure seems to be a great one!
As another reviewer noted...this is best used by taking measurements over a period of time and tracking changes. If your interest is simply to monitor your body composition over time for general health, once every one to three months is a good interval. If, on the other hand, you have a specific goal or are in an intensive nutrition/training cycle, you may wish to track once a week.
If you are looking to lose weight (by losing excess fat) ...measuring Lean Body Mass and Body Fat is the only way to insure you are not losing muscle and water.
Many diets cause massive losses of water and muscle (very low calorie and low carbohydrate diets for example)...leading to a quick regain of pounds at some point. If you are on a diet program, and nobody is measuring your Lean Body Mass and Body Fat, you simply do not know what your body is doing.

For the best accuracy with this...
You should take the measurements at the same time of day. You should take your body weight (needed to determine Lean Body Mass and Body Fat) on THE SAME SCALE at the same time of day every time.
Also, note what cloths you were wearing when you weigh yourself on the scale...always wear them for the weigh-in. Take a photograph of yourself now!! It is so helpful to see images of yourself at 30% bodyfat, then at 25%, then at 20%, then at 18%! If you feel shy, take them yourself in front of a mirror!
You will be glad you did. Just trust me on that.
If the program you are following is not giving you results in three weeks, something is not right. Get some help from a knowledgeable and qualified trainer. They can help you shorten the time it takes to reach your goals and be Your Personal Best.
Always ask potential program managers/trainers how they will help you achieve your goals. If they will not be using these components to help you...consider finding someone else:
1) Food and Nutrient intake monitoring
2) Cardiorespiratory Training
3) Resistance Training
4) Personal Assistance including Body composition monitoring
Additionally, if you are looking to lose body fat, you should consider removing foods with flavorings, colorings, additives, and preservatives from your diet at this time, as clinical tests have demonstrated that some of these can adversely effect bodyfat mobilization (i.e. fat burning) and some even enhance fat storage and stimulate the appetite.

The Omron HBF-306 is very simple to use. Because it uses electrical resitance and calculated "wing span" to measure BF% (Body Fat), it's possible (due to differences in arm length) that your reading may not be 100% accurate compared to a clinical "immersion" test. However, it is definitely consistent! I also have caliper type pinchers and found them too inconsistent (unless you can pinch the same exact spot each time).
With the Omron HBF-306, you can easily track changes in your body fat % as you progress through your fitness training. You'll be able to easily tell if your losing fat and/or gaining muscle by monitoring your BF% along with your weight. Check your weight and body fat % first thing in the morning for the most consistent readings. I highly recommend it.
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS FROM CUSTOMERS:
Q: Omron HBF-306C Fat Loss Monitor: LOW Readings?? I recently purchased this fat loss monitor myself, and I was pleasantly surprised at the relatively low readings I got... Do I think they are accurate? I think they are close to accurate... But what bothers me is that this other fat loss monitor (by tanita), which is actually a professional scale and costs nearly $2,000 (my gym has it) gives me readings which are nearly always higher than I think they should be... I am not sure what to make of this...
A: The device will be accurate from testing to the next testing, what will be different is how much salt, water and other things your body has retained or lost (which is something you can't completely control other than doing the exact intake as the day before, but then there are still things that will cause issues such as hormones that control the release of water from your body - you can't really control that per say) so the next testing is a slightly inaccurate reading, not due to the machine being cheap or not accurate, but due to your body and how its slightly different than the last time you tested.
So what you can do to ensure that you are getting as close to the exact same testing parameters as the "last 100 times you tested" is to set up everything before the test IN THE EXACT SAME WAY. Just for an example,
for breakfast you eat the exact same amount of:
2 eggs and 2 packets of oatmeal
1 cup of coffee with the exact same creamer amount and sugar etc
then you drink 8 oz water
then an hour later you drink another 8 oz water
take a note as to when you need to go to the bathroom (yes #1 and #2)... if you only go #1 or only go #2 its ok... just note the time
then do this for a few days in a row say monday-thursday
I'm sure you noticed a slight pattern as to when you prob will need to go to the restroom and then do your testing approx 30 min before you usually need to go and 30 min after and get those 2 readings
And for the record I would make sure to chose a time when you've had plenty of water hours before the test as these things rely on hydration for good accurate tests.
And from then on you try to eat, drink, #1, and or #2 and test at the same time and same way each time you test... this gives the unit the best possible equal testing controls each time to give you a more accurate reading.
Now is the unit calibrated to be super accurate to actually measure your real world actual bodyfat %? that's a whole different story...some units are very close to what %# you would get at a college or a long time personal trainer who knows what they are doing in a multi body site caliper bodyfat % test. (also note trainers can be really inaccurate as well if they don't do it often or know what they are 100% doing!!!!)
But what to take away from all this is...
1- always eat, drink and do the test at the same time of day to give the machine the best chance to get your numbers as accurate as they were last time.
2- don't think the number the machine gives you as 100% accurate, these machines are not perfectly calibrated all the time and or accurate...but they most likely will be off the same amount each time you test, so they are accurate against themselves (aka off the same % each time so accurate enough to see if you are losing or gaining).
3- I would make my own chart and week to week you might night see the % change much... but month to month is where you need to see % going down and or your waistline slimming/pant size reducing.. if its not moving then you need to make some real changes in your eating habits and workout habits bc the machine, tape measure and mirror isn't going to lie to you.
Q: Would I be able to use this with numerous people (my patients) or is it only able to be used with the max 9 people whose data can be stored?
A: Yes, it has a guest feature. So it will save 9 peoples profiles, but anyone can use if as a guest if they re-enter their info.
A: you can use it as many times as you would like. it just wont store their information in the unit. So just have every thing written down and it would work fine. You would have it set as guest not a person in the data.
Q: What height does this monitor go up to??
A: I am not aware of height limit. I have used it on a person who is 6'4''.
Q: Do you have to stand to use this, or can you sit?
A: Best time to take the measurement is after waking up, using the washroom, and giving yourself a couple minutes to get situated. Stand holding the body monitor in front of you. Do this about every two weeks to one month. Same time same everything. This will allow you to see your progress. Your body fluctuates through your the day so you want to be consistent. Hope this helps!
A: It is explained in the instructions that the most accurate readings will be when standing, with arms fully extended in front of you, but I have done it sitting as well and only had slight differences in readings.
Q: What's the weight limit on this?
A: A friend of mine was 260 and he used it and it gave a very high reading for him and I am 160 and I got a normal reading as the chat that came with it stated. I am about to have a friend that is 240 body builder try it.
Q: Do you need to weigh yourself on a scale every time before using the monitor?
A: You have to enter your weight (if you use the guest mode on the monitor) each time you use it, but if you already know your weight you don't have to weigh yourself.
Q: weight measurements are in kilograms and height in centimeters?
A: The monitor is already set to display data in US mode, but if you want you can change it to Metric Mode. You can find it in the users manual on page 13.
