Heart disease like coronary heart disease or CHD is usually caused by plaque buildup in the walls of the vessels. These plaques are due to debris, like fats, cholesterol and calcium, that flows together with blood.
When this happens, the heart does not get enough oxygenated blood therefor causing angina, or chest pains. When left untreated, this may lead to the total blockage of the vessels therefor cutting the heart’s supply of blood.
Treatments for this condition may be through medications or surgeries. Procedures such as angioplasty and coronary bypass surgery are usually done to help with the problem.
These procedures may be different but their functions are the same, which is to help the heart get enough supply of oxygen and blood. But what is coronary bypass surgery?
If in angioplasty, devices such as balloons and stents are inserted to the blocked vessels to artificially widen it, coronary bypass surgery is done by taking healthy vessels from certain parts of the body and is attached from the aorta to the coronary artery, bypassing the blocked vessel.
This procedure is done by giving the patient a general anesthesia and then is sedated. Once the patient is unconscious, doctors will take a blood vessel from either the wrist, the leg or the chest which will become the detour of blood towards the heart.
Before finishing the procedure, doctors will still check for other blocked vessels and will be doing the same procedure if needed. After the process, the wound is closed through wires and sutures, and the patient will be taken to the ICU for recovery.
People who are suffering from other conditions besides CHD, like hypertension or diabetes, are monitored for a longer time since people who have diabetes are at higher risks of developing infections and necrosis, while people who have hypertension are likely to have heart attack right after the procedure.
Ask your doctor what is coronary bypass surgery, and what are the possible options for treatment. Make sure that you get checked up regularly since treatment for this condition depends on its severeness.
But whichever method will be suited for you, be certain that you search for important information regarding the method and that you weigh in its benefits and side effects. Ask about the recuperating time and ways to prevent infections.
Preventing any onset of health conditions should be prioritized as well, to be able to save yourself from all the hassles of getting treatments for different conditions.
