Commemorating the Quincentennial In the year 1992, millions of people celebrated an historical event of monumental importance: the 500th Anniversary of the Voyage of Discovery by Christopher Columbus.
Tour of the Caravels In tribute to the Voyage of Discovery, three majestic replicas of the caravels that sailed with Columbus were constructed as part of a special event that commenced in 1991. That event was called the "Tour of the Caravels". The "Santa Maria", "Nina" and the "Pinta" sailed from Spain's Palos de la Frontera on October 12, 1991, and traveled to many ports throughout the United States, the Caribbean, and Canada in a spectacular re-creation of Columbus' original expedition. At each stopping point, a festival celebrated the arrival of the caravels and spectators were offered the chance to vicariously experience Columbus's first passage across the ocean.
The Caravel Bronze Collection The Caravel Bronze Collection includes four encapsulated medallions in a rich wood case. All four commemoratives have a common reverse design which is the official symbol surrounded by the legend "Quinto Centenario" (5th Centennial) and the dates 1492 - 1992.
The other side of the design for the four commemoratives are: 1. Christopher Columbus The image of Christopher Columbus, discoverer of America, is depicted with the legends reading "Cristobal Colon" (Christopher Columbus) and "Encuentro De Dos Mundos" (Encounter of Two Worlds). 2. Isabella - Queen of Castile Portrayed is a devout Queen Isabella, whose support of Columbus resulted in The Discovery of America. The legends surrounding her read "Isabel La Catolica" (Isabella The Catholic) and "Encuentro De Dos Mundos" (Encounter of Two Worlds). 3. The Santa Maria Represented is an illustration of the Santa Maria, flagship of Columbus' fleet on the first expedition. The legends read "Santa Maria" and "Encuentro De Dos Mundos". 4. Three Caravels Depicted are the three vessels that accompanied Columbus on the Voyage of Discovery: The Santa Maria, The Nina, and The Pinta. The legends read "Las Tres Carabelas" (The Three Caravels) and "Encuentro De Dos Mundos".
