Computer running too slow? Computer slow start up?


Is your computer running too slow? If yes, the question you should ask is whether it’s just sometimes slow or always running slow.
Do you also experience computer slow start up problem? Sometimes the start up process may take up to a few minutes.
Many computers suppose to run faster than they are today. To have a computer running at its original speed, scheduler preventive maintenance cannot be avoided. There are many reasons which lead to computer running too slow or computer slow start up problem. Below are some tips which you can use to tune up your computer.

1. The Window OS default settings are usually not optimized for every computers or users with specific application. Window OS is configured for a general-purpose computer system. You need to tweak and optimize its settings according to your personal application and your computer hardware configuration to get the best out of it.
Turning off unnecessary desktop features will speed up your computer. Here are a few actions you can take:
  • Go to Desktop, right-click and select Properties. In the Settings tab, change color quality from 32bits to 16bits.
  • Go to Desktop, right-click and select Properties. In the Appearance tab, click Effects and disable any unnecessary effects
  • Right-click My Computer at Desktop and click Properties. In the Advanced tab, click Settings under Performance. In the Visual Effects tab, you can click “adjust for best performance” by turning off all the unwanted visual effects.
There are commercial software you can use to customize and tweak the desktop setting with ease.
2. Inadequate RAM memory in your computer system will slow down programs execution. All active programs or processes use RAM memory to run. RAM memory is the working space of the computer, the more the better and the faster. When a program is terminated, the open data will still remain in the RAM memory until the computer is shut down. The working space of the computer will get smaller. There is software you can use to constantly monitor and recover RAM memory space by emptying old open data.
3. Using old hardware or inadequate processor speed. An old computer using the latest software will run slower compare to the latest computer. You may want to consider to upgrade the CPU or the other hardwares.
4. You probably have too many unnecessary programs running in the background. These programs are launched automatically each time when you boot up your computer. When you install new software, new items are added in to the automatic start-up list. You indeed do not need to launch these programs during boot up until you really need to use them. All these pre-launched programs running at the background will occupy computer resources such as RAM memory, CPU resource and will slow down your computer. Here’s how to disable items in the automatic start-up list.
  • Go to Start, in the Run dialogue box, type in MSCONFIG and hit Return. In the popup window select Startup and uncheck programs which you do not want them to be pre-launched during boot-up. This will resolve computer slow start up issue, and your computer will run faster on the next boot up.

5 You may have too many old files in your computers accumulated over a long period. Clearing off these junk files will help to boost up speed of your computer.
Go to My Computer, right-click on Drive C and click Properties. In the General tab, click on Disk Cleanup and then Ok button.
You will be able to remove temporary Internet files, empty Recycle Bin and remove Windows temporary files.
6 You data in your computer may be fragmented or broken into pieces. This will make the data or files harder to be retrieved or saved and result in problem with computer running too slow or computer with slow start up issue. You can run disk defragmentation to speed up the access of data. Go to Accessories via Start, then select system folder and look for File Defragmenter.
7 You should check the integrity of the files stored in your hard disk. You can detect and repair disk errors using the window Error Checking utility. When you use your hard drive, it develops bad sectors which will slow down the hard disk performance. Bad sectors make data writing difficult.
Go to My computer, right-click drive C and then click Properties. In the Tools tab, click Check Now button. Tick all the dialog box and then click Start.
8 Windows Registry is a directory which stores settings for window operating system. It holds information and settings for all the hardware, software, users, preferences, etc. Changes are reflected and stored in the Windows Registry whenever an user makes changes to the computer settings, file association, system policies, or installs new software. Overtime the Windows Registry will hold a lot of obsolete information. If the Registry keys get messed up, you will have serious computers errors, and you computer will be running too slow. You need to run Registry repair software to remove obsolete keys and to scan for errors. The registry repair software will remove old entries and fix any error as well as compact the registry directory.
9 You computer may be infected with Spyware or Adware, These are software that installed secretly on a personal computer to take partial control over the user’s interaction with the computer. Spyware will secretly monitor the user’s behavior and collect various types of personal information and relays it back to the advertisers. It can also interfere with user control of the computer by installing additional software or redirecting to a 3rd party website. Spyware is running at the background and will slow down your computer tremendously. You need to employ a spyware detection software to detect and clear up spyware.
