Our planet rotates around the Sun and as it rotates it receives radiations from the Sun. Radiations carry the solar power (or solar energy, as some call it) and the earth receives about 800 W/m2 on an average at the equator. Plants and vegetation grow by converting this electromagnetic energy they receive into chemical energy by photosynthesis; fruits, vegetables, etc. so grown sustain the birds, animals and all other organisms. The trees not only give fruits to eat but provide fuel also. Forests and animal kingdoms grow – all sustained by the solar power. The solar power received by the earth provides life and warmth to all. Solar power is received by all corners of the earth and man has always tried to devise ways of utilizing this free and abundant bounty of solar power to his best advantage.
A correction: Man has always tried to devise ways of utilizing this free and abundant bounty of solar power to his best advantage, but not always wisely. It is now realized that there is a vast, inexhaustible reservoir of solar power available to us of which we have not utilized even 1% yet, that we have been feverishly using up a limited source of fossil power source and in that hurry to use it, causing irreparable damage to our existence on this planet.
Solar power is an environment-friendly source of power. We must take advantage of this clean power so freely available to us as a viable alternative to fossil fuels, use of which is threatening our existence.
