Want to improve your golf swing?

Here are a couple of golf tips that will have you driving better and straighter.

You might have to “unlearn” a bad habit. Many golfers hold the club too loosely when they perform their golf swing. The truth is, you will do much better with a tighter grasp. And by tight, I mean quite tight. Not firm, but tight! Squeeze that club and get a good brace before you initiate your backward golf swing.

Some pros say you’ll never go wrong by having your grip too tight, but you could damage your game by having a loose grip. You don’t want to be holding the club so tightly that your back, neck and shoulder muscles all bunched up, however.

Don’t worry about making your swing too stiff and wooden. That won’t be a problem with your golf swing. Quite the opposite, in fact. When you grasp the club tightly, you will prevent a number of fairly typical golf swing problems from occurring. You prevent your hands from opening at the top, for one thing. You stop your left wrist from collapsing during the swing (or your right wrist if you swing with your left hand). You prevent over-swinging, and a number of other golf swing problems as well.

For an optimal golf swing, hold the golf club to give you a tight, two-knuckle overlap.

This instruction is for right handed golfers. Hold the golf club tightly enough that almost all fingers grasp the club and encircle it. The last three fingers on your left hand should be on the club, as should the first three fingers of your right hand. Firmly hook your forefingers around the club. Touch the tip of your forefinger to the tip of your thumb.

If your left hand is dominant, reverse the instructions for your golf swing.

Should you hold the club differently when you perform your swing from the top, the club will sink into the vee space formed between your thumb and first finger. Having the club in that space makes you lose control from the top of your swing, and you will have to regain that control throughout the golf swing.

It’s also helpful to your golf swing if you are standing correctly. There are two main points to remember.

You want to stand so you have plenty of room to swing your club back freely. You also want enough room that you can arc the club downwards towards your feet. Your knees should be flexed. You are better flexing too much than flexing too little.

Stand with your weight distributed evenly, then bend forward from the waist. Bend enough that your shoulders are rounded and slumping. Lower your head throughout your golf swing. If you are right handed, your right hand will be lower down on the golf club than your left hand, and your right shoulder will be lower than your left should. If left is your dominant side, you left shoulder and left hand will be lower than your right shoulder and right hand when you get in position for your golf swing.

You’re all set now for a strong and powerful golf swing. Here’s to a hole in one!
