Gorgeous with a wonderful picture, overall Samsung has created a winning LCD HDTV., June 10, 2006

Flat HDTV prices are falling almost as fast as the stock market these
days. It would seem that this might be the right time to jump into the
HDTV craze. Let the research begin then. I'll get to the details of the
Samsung unit itself after a brief, er, long background intro.
I tend to be the type of consumer that will read every unbiased CR
style review, online article, visit every store within a 100-mile
radius and test every model in existence--no matter what the purchase.
This is particularly helpful when purchasing a television, since you
really don't know just how good a picture will be, no matter what the
specs say, until you see it side-by-side with the competition.

I've been holding out for the $2000 price-point for a large-screen
Flat HDTV, and the time has now come when there are several options
from which to chose. CR reports, quite accurately I might add, that
Costco has some of the best prices among retailers, but I will say, as
a HUGE Costco fan, that the selection is a bit limited, as is the
nature of their business.

After looking at about 50 (literally) different Flat-TV's, and
originally wanting to go with a Plasma, I narrowed the choice to a
37-inch LCD from Viewsonic, a 42-inch LCD from Philips, and two 40-inch
Samsung LCD units. Consideration was made for size, picture quality,
design and style, features, overall research and brand
reputation/reviews, value, bang-for-the-buck and more. Say what you
will about Plasma, and they are beautiful, I've seen too many red-glow,
distorted and burned pictures, and the last straw was a brand new floor
model that had already gone bad in 2-weeks at a local store. LCD it is
then--I purchased the Viewsonic at Costco, only to receive a unit with
a defective tuner, back to the store for a full refund--no worries. As
I'm strolling through the aisles of another establishment, I come
across a vision of beauty, she looks amazingly like Liberace's
reincarnated baby-grand piano. She is brilliant in her little black
dress, even standing next to the costliest supermodels from Pioneer and
Sony--in fact, she may be more beautiful. The Samsung LNS4051D they
tell me. Samsung name, 2 HDMI inputs, 4000:1 contrast ratio, PIP, you
know the rest...and stunning good looks to boot! But the cost was too
high. A few clicks later, I find her on Amazon for my target price,
including shipping...S-O-O-O-L-D, says I!! Return policy is a bit
harsh, but delivery was on-time, and price was unbeatable. Well done
Amazon.
Panasonic may hold a slight edge in overall picture quality, but
Samsung is the world's largest producer of LCD screens, and they can be
quite proud of this unit.
A few areas for improvement--not even the most beautiful of ladies
is perfect--blacks still need work, which is what keeps it from being
the best-of-the-best, the remote needs work (don't they all), and once
hung on the wall, the connections are nearly impossible to access, due
to the back, rather than side connecting style.
Flat HDTV prices are slated to continue falling over the summer,
and will then flatten out--if you are lucky, you might just be able to
snag a date with one of these hot little numbers, before they're all
spoken for.

A first rate TV for the money, April 13, 2007

We've had our 5265 for a few days now, and I've had some time to adjust
and tweak the settings to where color, brightness and black details are
pretty good. That's kind of an understatement as there is a big WOW
factor when it's all set up well. A very important factor with a tv
this large is the quality of the signal being fed to it. If your
provider uses heavy compression on the signal being fet to you, you're
going to see macro-blocking artifacts and other such noise. Our tv is
plugged into cable directly out of the wall, and the built-in tuner
takes care of the rest. HD from NBC and others is very cool. We watch
DVDs on an upscaling Sony with HDMI, and the picture is very enjoyable.
HD-DVD or BluRay would be a real treat.

I only have a couple of relatively small issues that keep me from
giving it 5 stars. One is that when auto-programming cable channels,
the tv would freeze-up and turn itself off whenever it got to channel
108 for some reason. Then, after a moment, it would turn itself back on
and repeat as long as it was on 108. There's nothing on 108 for us, so
to bypass this, I just unplugged the cable as it reached 108 and
plugged it back in after it was past it, and everything works fine.
Now, to be honest, I'm not sure it's the fault of the tv or the feed
from the cable company, but it didn't happen with our smaller tv.

The second problem (minor) is that sometimes in dark scenes, it
seems like the tv can't figure out how to properly display the
darkness. I'll say it again: only sometimes. It happens so infrequently
that most people would probably not notice, but it shows up as lighter
shades of gray eminating from the sides of the tv inward. 9 times out
of 10 the tv shows solid black, but sometimes (mostly depending on the
disc being watched) it shows these lighter side areas in a scene that's
very dark or has darkness with little other detail. I'm a bit paranoid
about these big LCDs since I'm a former owner of another brand that had
terrible banding problems. On the 5265, though, it is seemingly so
small a problem that I hesitate to mention it, but it's there, and some
people have a harder time with it than others.

On the plus side, again - the picture is amazing and even standard
definition played off of our home video camera looks really nice. Also,
the screen is glossy compared to most LCDs. If you don't like
reflections (think near tube-tv reflection) or have sunny windows
facing where you'll put this tv, it could cause you problems. I happen
to really enjoy the glossy screen, however, as it ads a real feel of...
oh, I don't know how to explain it - visual "POP", I guess. A very nice
tv for the price. I'm looking forward to enjoying ours for a long time.

Wow!!! This TV is Awesome!!!, June 12, 2007

I did tons of research for almost two years waiting for the technology
to mature and for the prices to reasonably come down. Well the wait is
over and I have the Samsung LNT4661F in my living room and it is
awesome!! The HD is amazing and the blacks are just the way I like
them, beautifully deep but not crushed!

I did consider the LNT4665F but the glossy screen and overall
glossiness was just too annoying. The blacks were way to crushed as
well!

I was going to buy a Sony, Sharp, Mitsubishi or Olevia but the Sony
had the clouding problems (Check AVS Forum. Their 2007 line seems to
have the same issues too based on advanced reviews), the Sharps had
banding issues, which my friend who bought one experienced (AVS also
had tons of reviewers reporting banding issues). The Mitsubishi's were
just to expensive...If I were to spent that much I would have a buy a
Sony instead. And the Olevia was also out of my budget...also I wanted
the 47 inch but the TV weighed a ton. I love the PQ on the Sharp and
Sony but the problems were too much not to ignore, especially when you
are paying Two grand or more for a TV. Samsung seemed to have solved
their cloudiness problems and their 2007 line seemed to have worked out
most of the problems associated with LCD HDTV's like viewing angles and
rich blacks. Well overall I felt I made the right choice!!! Because my
picture is spectacular with no banding and no clouds!

I wanted the Sharp's faster response time but I've noticed no
issues concerning ghosting while watching sports or playing video
games.

The speakers are great too! I know some people had problems with
the sound but they sound great to me!! I do have the TV connected to a
surround sound system...but that is for DVD movies and games. The TV
speakers are great for regular TV viewing! It's nice not to have to
turn on so many components to get great sound!

Overall my experience has been great with this TV! The HD PQ is
awesome and the SD viewing isn't bad either! If you're looking for a
great HDTV without breaking the bank, seriously consider this TV!

Oh and Amazon was great. TV delivered setup and they took the box
away! It did take a week (and that was a long week) but was worth the
wait. It did give me time to set up the entire entertainment system.
Amazon even refunded me the difference after the price dropped!! Only
two days later!! Also the 30 day return policy with no questions asked
and no restocking fee is awesome!! And they come and take the TV away
for you!! Take take that Best Buy and Circuit City!!! Buy Samsung LNT4661F 46" 1080p LCD HDTV From Amazon.com, Trusted Online Since 1996.$2,199.99Amazons Free Whiteglove Shipping! No. 4) Samsung LNT3253H 32" LCD HDTVTechnical Details

Nice but could be better, April 15, 2007

I'm not an expert reviewer but a reasonably knowledgeable electronics
consumer. Here are my observations from a week's use of the LNT3253H. I
won't repeat the specifications and the like that you can find most
anywhere. I suspect that some of what I say is applicable to other
panel sizes in the 2007 53 series.
A successor to last year's popular 51 series, the 53 is really more
of an updated version of 2006's highly rated LNS3296 with a little more
contrast and one more HDMI port and a USB port. (I was told by Samsung
customer service, 1-800-726-7864, that the successors to the latter
line will be 1080p.)
PROS
Sharp picture with vibrant color in HD. Subjectively: when viewing
HD feeds in the showroom, the 2006 version of the Sony Bravia XBR has
better picture processing than this model, and the 2007 Toshiba Regza
is comparable to the LNT3253.
Very high quality panel with no dead pixels. It is said that Sony
and Samsung LCD panels come from the same Samsung plant. My set was
manufactured (probably assembled) in Mexico.
Uses the desirable Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL) according to Samsung customer service.

Nice contrast; I was told by many people, though, that dynamic
contrast has a bit of marketing hype to it so just don't buy an LCD
model because the dynamic contrast is slightly better than a
competitor's. Sony avoids talking about it and their Bravia sets
produce excellent pictures.

2 RF inputs, one for antenna and the other for cable/satellite.
Competitors I've seen don't have that feature in their 2007 32" sets.

Digital tuner is high quality; very sensitive. Let me clarify that
the digital ATSC tuner will receive analog NTSC signals. That's not
entirely clear from the product specs, and competitors usually indicate
their tuners are ATSC/NTSC/QAM. This HDTV does all of that.

Remote is logical and easy to use; better than the 2007 Regza's (I
didn't compare it to the Sony's). Nice that the Samsung recognizes
input sources and allows one button scrolling through connected ones
rather than having to go to a menu. Don't know if source labeling or
picture settings by source are available.

Audio: pretty typical, meaning not superb but adequate.

For the most part, a well-engineered and elegant set with nice
touches, like unobtrusive function buttons in the front (some other
manufacturers like Sharp and Toshiba just don't get it that some sets
will go into tight spaces like cabinets; they put the on-board function
buttons on the top or side of the unit--how inconvenient).

CONS
The single pedestal stand is a nice piece of engineering but could
not be securely fastened to the set I purchased, so it was wobbly and,
worse, made the set noticeably sag to one side. I checked two other
display units in electronics stores and discovered that they did
wobble. Other 32" sets from Sony, Sharp, and Toshiba, while not capable
of turning on their pedestals, are solidly anchored. I don't know
whether it's a design or manufacturing flaw -- or both.

720p resolution, 8 ms response time, and 10-bit processing. Most
experts seem to think there's really no discernable difference in 32"
sets between 720p and 1080p at typical viewing distances of 8 to 10
feet. I disagree; there is a difference to my eyes. Eight ms response
is good, but 6 ms is better for action scenes. Samsung touts 10-bit
processing on last year's 96 series models, but not on this one (which
Samsung customer service confirmed to me it has). Perhaps that's
because competitors are upping the ante with 14-bit and better
processing.
Blacks are not as black as they should be on this set, and most
annoying, there is some residual image on occasion. The test: MGM's
lion logo goes immediately to black for about a second before a program
begins. On my 19" Samsung Synchmaster LCD, the black stays black after
the logo disappears. Same thing on my 12 year-old Panasonic direct-view
(CRT) 32" set. Not so on this set; a residual reverse image of the MGM
logo lingers on the black screen.
Legacy analog from over-the-air analog broadcasting and VCR is
substantially lower quality than on my analog set. I know that Samsung
claims its engine helps make analog pictures look sharper, and they do
when DNIe is turned on, but they're still disappointing when compared
to a quality analog set. (Digital broadcasts and DVDs are fine; I use
the excellent Sony DVP-NS75H upscaling DVD player.)

An audio nit: My old Panasonic TV allowed control of the sound
level output and muting of the home theater receiver from its remote.
This set's remote does not do that, requiring the use of the receiver's
remote for volume control and muting. The Samsung's is supposed to be
universal, though, and might be programmed to do so. Another nit:
Muting is not 100% complete. There was slight sound leakage in all
muting situations (both from the remote and "internal muting") on my
set. It seemed like Lilliputians had taken up residence inside the set.

NOTES
You can turn off the obtrusive (to me) bottom blue light if desired from the menu.

Samsung has some info on their website about the unit, including
the product manual (very nice--why can't competitors do something this
simple and helpful?).
The power cord is detachable from the set (yes!). It's
three-pronged, with a grounding prong (reflects Samsung's monitor
heritage?).
A brief note about size for those of you changing from old-style
analog direct-view sets to an LCD like this. A 32" analog set is a 4:3
ratio set; while a 32" HDTV LCD set is "widescreen" at the theater-like
16:9 ratio. What this means in practice is: on your old analog set some
DVDs and broadcast HDTV programs are centered on the set with black
bars at the top and bottom (some DVD players will allow you to "zoom"
and crop the picture to fill up the set, but you lose program's side
action). They should fit just fine in your new LCD, though. Analog
content that fills up the screen of your old analog 32" set is centered
with black bars at the sides on your new LCD set. In effect, with older
content, it's like watching a program on a 26" set, not a 32" set,
according to the experts. I hope this isn't too confusing. The bottom
line for me: when replacing a 32" analog set, think about going to a
larger 37" or 40" LCD set if your budget and shelving can manage it.

I discovered that my AmEx and Master Charge extend the in-home
parts and labor service warranty for an additional year; my Visa does
not, so it might be a good idea to check with your credit card company
prior to purchase.

There were a few issues with the LNT3253H that surfaced during the
week that I owned it. I strongly recommend thoroughly previewing
(kicking the tires, as it were and checking your preferences) this or
any other large screen TV before buying it from any online retailer
(BTW, it seems that most of them will not accept returns). You may wish
to check with Amazon customer service to find out exactly what the
return and refusal policies are, since, as many of you know, once you
hit the "buy" button you may get the dreaded "your order is being
processed, you can't make any changes" message if you change your mind.

Grrrr8 TV..... My first Samsung purchase, June 7, 2006

I just got this TV yesterday from amazon's vendor JR.com. Though I had
initial problems like delayed delivery and bad order processing between
Amazon and Jr.com but i am glad that they got it delivered finally:). I
was looking to buy either Sony Bravia or LNS3251D but after doing
extensive research and visiting bestbuy/circuitCity etc., I and my wife
decided to buy this TV.

Here are some pros and cons,

Pros:
-Good picture quality
-Good contrast ratio/resolution..better than Sony
-Black Colour
-Blazing Fast ~8ms response time which is what even sony has.
-2 HDMI connections, though they support only version 1.0 and currently HDMI specs version 1.2a are out in the market
-Lots other useful connections like 2 composite A/V (1 side), 2
S-Video (1 side), 1 component (Y/Pb/Pr), 2 HDMI, 2 RF, 1 USB, 1 RS232
-PIP
Cons:
- Till now i only found one i.e. its HDMI connections still support
version 1.0 and I cannot connect my Toshiba DVD player which supports
Ver1.1 HDMI specs. Buy Samsung LNT3251H 32" LCD HDTV From Amazon.com, Trusted Online Since 1996.$$979.00
