Dog Toilet Training Made Easy
Who wouldn't love an adorable and cute little puppy? Puppies are great pets but
sometimes, they can be a great problem especially if they are constantly making
a mess inside your house. If you think there's no solution to your problem, them
you're quite wrong. Teaching old dogs new tricks will not prove to be successful,
but if you potty train your puppy at a very early age, you can benefit from it
over the long term.
So how will you toilet train your dog? Potty training is not as hard as it
sounds. All you have to do is to familiarize yourself with the different things
that you have to do while training your pup.
One way is to teach your puppy a specific command or word. When you're teaching
your pup to urinate or poop, use the specific words or phrase over and over
again. You can say 'go potty' or perhaps, 'go poop'. Choose a word or group of
words that's easy for you to say. If the puppy becomes familiar with the words,
it would come as a familiar command to your pup and he will gladly obey.
Try to have one spot where your puppy can urinate or poop. Perhaps you've
already observed that your puppy does his thing on the exact spot inside the
house so choose a place outside where you will take him every time he needs to
urinate or poop. Dogs easily recognize their smell so if you take the puppy out
every time he needs to 'go', he can locate his smell and will go there every
time.
Now, what if your puppy accidentally messes inside the house? Clean the area
where your puppy peed or pooped and make sure that there will be no trace of the
smell. You can punish your puppy lightly and don't be harsh with him.
Don't leave your puppy outside at night time. Confine your pup inside a crate or
inside a box. The place should just be the right size for your pup to sleep on
and early in the morning, take your puppy outside and command him to pee or poop.
At first, there would always be accidents but after some time, your pup will
learn to do it the right way.
When you're toilet training your dog, you need to give him a lot of attention.
You have to keep a close watch of your pup and take note of the warning signs
when he's about to 'go'. So every time you see the sign, take your puppy outside.
If you're a patient trainer, you can also teach your pup to head for the door
when he's going to pee or poop.
Puppies usually take naps during the day. After your pup wakes up, take him
outside to do his or her thing and after that, you can bring your puppy inside
and play with him.
Make sure that you don't give too much water to your dog especially if it's
nearly bedtime. This is a very good step to take if you live in a cold area. It
is not that advisable in hot areas because your puppy can get dehydrated and in
this case, pet owners need to leave water beside their dogs.
If your puppy obeys you command, make him feel that you're happy. Give your dog
some kind of reward like dog treats. Recognize your pup's efforts to obey your
commands and after some time, your puppy can do these things on his own.
