What has our Justice system in this State become
and is this how we now care for those which we are responsible? This letter is again in concern for the welfare of
Mechael Miller an inmate of Lowell Correctional facility, Lowell Florida. I won’t waste any
time discussing how Mechael was railroaded into ending up where she is today or
of the previous problems we have encountered with the Department of
Corrections. If you would like to read Mechael’s story just google Judge
Ficarrotta and look for her story. I’m sure you will find it in the number one position.
This email concerns Mechael’s health and well being and the health and well
being of her unborn child.
Mechael has Lupus which as many of you know is a chronic
autoimmune disease that is potentially debilitating and sometimes fatal as the
immune system attacks the body’s cells and tissue, resulting in inflammation
and tissue damage. I personally spent a good portion of last year trying to
make sure that DOC’s medical personal took the proper care of Mechael. She
finally made it to work release but was sent back because she was working with
family, specifically I. At least while here we could see that Mechael was
properly taken care of. The only reason that personnel at Suncoast Work Release
could come up with to send her back was that she lied to staff. Although
Mechael was specifically charged with omitting information? Neither of which is
true. For that she spent 90 days in solitary and lost 102 days of gain time.
Since Mechael has been in solitary confinement and now in
general population she has not been getting the care that is by law accorded
her. Solitary itself, to one with lupus, is much more devastating due to the
muscle pain and loss of exercise needed.
Mechael’s diet, which is probably one of the most important aspects of
keeping her healthy, is deplorable. Now that she is pregnant her condition even
worse since she is such a high risk pregnancy due to her having lupus. Yet to
this day Doctors at Lowell
have told her she is not pregnant and Mechael is required to work outside
grounds in the blazing sunshine. Anyone familiar with lupus knows that direct
sunlight is one of the worst things a lupus patient can be in contact with,
often resulting in seizures. I believe that DOC also has a rule that any inmate
that has had seizures in the past five years is not to be put on a top bunk let
alone an inmate that is pregnant. Yet Mechael is still on a top bunk even
though she has requested to be placed on a lower bunk many times. Mechael is
now four months pregnant and can feel the baby’s movements. Yet doctors at the
institution actually prescribed her 800 milligram dosages of ibuprofen. As
Drugs states taking ibuprofen during pregnancy may result in birth defects.
My question to DOC personnel, Politicians, News media and
concerned citizens is who is going to be held responsible if something tragic
happens to Mechael or my unborn child. When we call we are often ignored, when we write
we are often ran in circles. What are we to do and who is actually responsible?
I vow today that if harm is brought to
either of them I will spend every horrific day that follows fighting to bring
to Justice those that we find to be responsible. Mechael is one of only 11% of
first time felons to ever see a prison gate and by last years DOC statistics
only one of fifteen woman to be in a Florida
prison for writing a so called worthless check. What has our Justice system in
this State become and is this how we now care for those which we are
responsible?
Sincerely, Geoffrey
Holdermiller
