This article is to provide free information about Chinese astrology.

There are twelve different zodaic animals in Chinese zodiac horoscopes. Each Chinese zodiac period consists of full moon cycle, from new moon to full moon. So, 12 full lunar cycles are there in a Chinese Zodiac new year. But, one animal stands for a whole one year. So, a Chinese lunar cycle goes round again for twelve years before begining all over.

There are particular characteristics associated with every zodiac animal in the Chinese system. The animals are rat, snake, sheep, ox, rabbit, tiger, horse, monkey, rooster, boar, dog and dragon. This year 2007 is Year of Pig with Fire element.

There are a few legends associated with the creation of the Chinese lunar calendar. One of them has it that the gods wanted to exam which of the animals could get to their position the soonest. So, they asked all of the animals to compete by swimming through a lake. The order of their reaching is reflected in the Chinese zodiac astrology. According to another legend, before leaving earth, Lord Buddha asked the 12 animals to go to see him. And when they went to see him, he named the moon cycles according to the order of appearance of each animals. This makes the Chinese zodiac horoscopes a circle with twelve equal parts much like a pie sliced into twelve parts.

So, if you fall under Animal ‘Rat’, you are supposed to be charming, perfectionist, aggressive, and a little secretive. You are also party loving and somehow stubborn. Those who belong to the ‘Animal Rat’ zodiac may also be somehow extreme at times. Therefore, each zodiac represents a complete personality with both negative and positive traits.

Before changing to the conventioal solar calendar of the western culture, the Chinese used to follow their own Chinese astrology lunar calendar which was based on Chinese lunar cycles. So, Chinese astrology is based on the conventional lunar calendar, which has 12 cycles of the moon.

Chinese zodiac horoscope system is very different from the solar-based western zodiac system we are all so familiar with. However, many a time the traits you are supposed to have under western system are much the same as those under the Chinese zodiac system.
