Berthe Morisot
Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1849-1919) produced his first
prints around 1890. He was by then almost fifty years old and a
celebrated artist. His printmaking activities came in response to
requests from publishers, authors and colleagues who imagined how
desirable prints by the master would be. During the following 14 years,
Renoir created most of his approximately 50 published graphic works.
His most sought after prints are the large format color lithographs, of
which Georgetown Frame Shoppe has “L’Enfant au Biscuit.”.
Almost half of Renoir's graphic works were published
by Ambroise Vollard, the preeminent publisher of graphics and livres
d'artistes during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. Vollard
commissioned mostly lithographs from Renoir. The few etchings Renoir
did produce served as front pieces for the deluxe editions of his
monographs.
