Detailed Description
Don't Get Cheated Out of Your SPL!
Only if there was a way to distance or delay the closest woofers so they all come in time, maximum SPL would be easily achieved.
Realizing the in-car physical limitation, Earthquake engineered the PHASE 4SPL Optimizer. Conveniently marked in linear feet distance, the PHASE 4 allows the user to simply dial-in the necessary distance to maximize the SPL.
The PHASE-4 is the key to opening the door to new level of SPL competition. Earthquake has provided a mean to achieve the extra dB's every competitor is looking for. By time-aligning their systems for maximum impact at the microphone position.
Four independent channels of
adjustment measured in feet of
phase adjustment at 50Hz.
Bypass Switch: to switch from the
unadjusted system to the phase
corrected system for easy
comparison.
Phase Invert Switch: to invert the signal. Each channel
can be individually inverted.
Control knobs: for phase adjustment marked in feet for
easy reference.
Winner Of
Design & Engineering Award CEMA 2000
The PHASE-4 SPL Optimizer
was selected #1, by the Consumer
Electronics Manufacturers
Association - CEMA,
for the 1999 Design &
Engineering Honors.
Perception vs Reality
IASCA, USAC, and DB-DRAG competitors spend weeks of sleepless nightsdesigning and constructing “The ultimate SPL Machines”, and so they think. When they fall short of their target SPL, they add more amplifiers, hoping to achieve their goals.
The perception that more power is the solution is often wrong. SPL is basically the measurement of pressure differential due to moving air at any given frequency. A microphone measures the pressure differential, and that is your SPL.
The reality is an audio system maximum SPL is achieved only when the pressure waves - from all speakers at peak - are detected by the microphone at the same point in time.
From the microphone perspective, woofers that are closer develop positive pressure early. While further away speakers may have a negative pressure at the mic. A full positive pressure, when added to full negative pressure, would lead to cancellation; irrelevant of how much power is pushed through the system. Only If there was a way to distant or delay the closest woofers so they all come in time, maximum SPL would be easily achieved.

+6dB The Phase 4 is the key to opening the door to a new level of SPL competition. Earthquake has provided a mean to achieve the extra dB's every competitor is looking for. By time-aligning their systems for maximum impact at the microphone position.
PHASE 4 functions:
Four independent channels of adjustment measured
in feet of phase adjustment at 50Hz.
Bypass Switch: to switch from the unadjusted system
to the phase corrected system for easy comparison.
Phase Invert Switch: to invert the signal. Each channel
can be individually inverted.
Control knobs: for phase adjustment marked in feet for
easy reference.
Used in both sound quality and high SPL car audio applications, the Phase 4 is designed to accomplish the following objectives:
Increase overall subwoofer presence and volume. By brining the sound wave from each woofer channel in to phase at the same point on the dash.
At the same time compensating for differences in speaker placement versus the distances to the listener.
Raise the perceived sound stage and promote improved imaging, by bringing all channels into phase at the same listening position.
