In Genesis 25:29–34 , Esau returned to his brother Jacob being famished from the fields.
He begged his twin brother to give him some "red pottage".
Jacob offered to give Esau a bowl of stew in exchange for his birthright (the right to be recognized as firstborn), and Esau agreed. Thus Jacob fairly buys/exchanges Esau's birthright.
This is believed to be the origin of the English phrase "mess of pottage".
Gen.25 Verses 29 to 34
Once when Jacob was boiling pottage, Esau came in from the field, and he was famished.
And Esau said to Jacob, "Let me eat some of that red pottage, for I am famished!" (Therefore his name was called Edom.)
Jacob said, "First sell me your birthright."
Esau said, "I am about to die: of what use is a birthright to me?"
Jacob said, "Swear to me first." So he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob.
Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentils, and he ate and drank, and rose and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.
