A new study published in the Journal of Optometry has confirmed that supplementation with Zeaxanthin and Lutein significantly helps improve vision and protect against Macular Degeneration. This is just the latest in a long line of studies and trials into the role of carotenoids (particularly Lutein and Zeaxanthin) in protecting the integrity of vision.
If you are over 55 then you have an increased risk of developing age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD). The common symptoms of AMD are: – blind spots: colour degradation: difficulty reading in low light: general reduction of visual acuity at night. Any (or all) of these symptoms can lead to loss of independence and ability to carry out simple tasks.
This recent study was carried out at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Chicago, USA and they found that supplementation with a combination of Zeaxanthin and Lutein over the course of 12 months gave an increase in macular pigment optical density: improved vision plus many other benefits.
Zeaxanthin and Lutein are powerful nutrients which occur naturally in the back of the eye – they help protect the photoreceptors which help maintain central vision, colour perception and fine detail. Fortunately, these nutrients are found in many fruits and vegetables but only in minute quantities. Today’s diets of processed and cooked foods mean that most people in the developed world do not get enough Zeaxanthin or Lutein to keep our eyes in optimal condition. So we need to supplement.
The overall benefits of Zeaxanthin and Lutein have been known for over 20 years and there are now several proprietary products on the market containing these powerful anti oxidants. Unfortunately, many of them have not fully performed to the levels expected. Research has shown that merely putting the nutrients in your mouth is not enough. They have to be in a form that they can be absorbed by the bloodstream and transported to where they are needed – the back of the eye. This is called “bio-availability”.
The good news is that there is now a product that has been developed to maximise its bio-availability by producing a fine spray that you direct under your tongue. This improves the absorption of Zeaxanthin and Lutein by UP TO 900 times the absorption from traditional tablets and capsules. The manufacturers of NEW FOCUS sublingual spray claim that the Zeaxanthin and Lutein will be delivered to the eye within 2 minutes of applying the spray. This simple to use spray also helps protect against Cataracts and Glaucoma.
New Focus Sublingual Spray is 900 times more effective at delivering these two very essential nutrients directly into the bloodstream than pills or capsules, Using this unique delivery method of simply spraying the supplement under the tongue means that the zeaxanthin and lutein should be delivered to the eye within two minutes of applying the spray.
Zeaxanthin and Lutein are the only two carotinoids found in the retina of the eye. Scientific research has shown that supplementation with these carotinoids can increase macular pigment density: thus providing natural protection against macular degeneration.
The amount of lutein and zeaxanthin in the eye is referred to as macular pigment density. People with the highest risk of AMD, that is the elderly, women, smokers and people with light iris colours, also tend to have low macular pigment density.
Macular pigment density can be increased by dietary means. Such evidence provides an indirect link between dietary intake of zeaxanthin and lutein, macular pigment density and AMD risk.
The main benefits from using New Focus are:
Protection against AMD
Help protect against Cataracts
Help protect against Glaucoma
A clearer view
Improved night vision
Reduced visual fatigue
Improved general eye health
