The Statue of Liberty was given to the United States by the people of France as a symbol of the friendship that was established during the American Revolution. The Statue was deisgned by sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi and became a joint project with the American's responsible for the construction of the pedastal and the French responsible for construction of the actual Statue and assembling her on a base. While the statue was originally to be completed in 1876 in commemoration of the centennial of the American Decaration of Independence, financing constraints delayed the official commemoration until October 28,1886.

The Statue of Liberty stands 305 feet, 6 inches tall, from the base of the pedestal to the tip of the torch. Her exterior is covered in copper and the light green color patina, is the result of the copper's natural weathering. There are 154 steps from pedestal to the head. Lady Liberty, as the statue is also known, holds a table in her left hand that is inscribed with the date July IV MDCCLXXVI (July 4, 1776), the date of the United States Declaration of Independence. Her crown contains seven rays which represent the Seven Continents and Seven Seas. Lying at the feet of the Statue are the broken shackles of oppression and tyranny.

While the Statue itself is no longer open to visitors, the museum and ten story pedestal on which the statue stands remains open to visitors. Visitors are required to make reservations and obtain a "Monument Access Pass" in advance of their visit. The Statue of Liberty is one of the most recognizable stuctures in the United States and was until the age of the airplane one of the first glimpses of the United States for millions of immigrants.
