Ok so we all know that lots of dogs love to chew things but how do I stop my dogs destructive chewing?
You and your dog need to work together on this one with you leading the way.
When you bring your pup home, have an area that is dog proof and have everything that you want to keep safe, put right up high or away in cupboards.
Don't forget that your dog may be able to jump quite high or will stand on his back legs if there is something that he wants to get hold of.
Help your dog to learn what he can and cannot by chew. Don't give him your old winter coat and then expect him to know not to chew your brand new coat. He won't understand the difference.
Instead, buy him a selection of his own chewable toys, because don't forget, dogs love to chew, and if they don't have their own toys to chew, they will find something of yours to get their teeth into.
Let him have a few of his chewable toys and then after a few days rotate those toys with some others that you have bought for him. This will ensure that his toys are fresh and interesting.
Give your dog lots of praise when he chews his own stuff and if he does start to chew your table leg, clap your hands loudly, interrupt him and straight away give him his own chewable toy. Praise him as soon as his jaws lock around his toy and by doing this you will help him learn what is expected.
