The new DIGIC 5 image processor is said to be excellent in two areas. It offers better performance in the white balance when using popup flash strobe and the burst shooting speed. The new camera uses multi-layer analysis that enables users to get better flash white balance as well as ambient lighting. Its predecessor, the SX30 only offered 1.3 frames per second at full resolution and 3.6 when the resolution is dropped to lower level. The new SX 40 HS standard speed offers 2.4 frames per second and the High-speed Burst HQ mode is able to give you 10.3 frames per second.
Improved Smart AUTO mode
This new DSLR camera is able to detect some additional scene types when it is in the Smart AUTO mode. The previous SX30 could detect 28 scene types whereas this new camera offers 4 additional modes.
