Review Ė Reasons to restore your APC Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS)
Or How I saved $265 restoring an APC Smart UPS 1000 Backup power system
So you have a small APC backup power supply, or maybe you have a large and complex APC system like the APC Matrix 5000.
Once that battery alarm sounds you have two choices Ė replace the batteries or scrap the unit.
At the low end of APC models, there are simple 2 battery units that cost little, provide good power protection, and very reliable operation. So it seems sensible to scrap the unit and replace it.
But it can be restored to full operation in almost every instance by exchanging the batteries.
APC sells the batteries in packs identified by an RBC part number. They assemble 2 batteries with sticky tape and then provide fusing and jumpers to make installation of a new pack very easy. On the other hand myBatteryman.com sells the batteries only, and you reuse the existing fuse and jumpers.
This reuse of simple small parts saves as much as $100 on some packs. For this reason many people successfully restore their APC batteries with good quality generic packs sold by myBatteryman.com.
Letís look at Total Cost of Ownership
1. 6 year old APC Smart UPS 1000 Cost $350
2. Replacement Cost for new Smart UPS 1000 -- $350
3. So: if replacement unit lasts same duration as the failed unit then Total Cost of ownership is $700 over 12 years of service. Thatís $58.33 per year. Not too bad for all og that peace of mind.
But what happens to total cost of ownership if we restore the existing backup supply to full run-time capacity by replacing the batteries and retaining the existing power plant.
a. Original Cost of the APC Smart UPS system $350
b. Replacement battery set cost $85.
c. Assume batteries replaced after 6 years and then operated successfully another 6 years.
d. Total cost of ownership for 12 years is $435 or $36.25 per tear per APC Smart UPS 1000.
But if I need to replace or restore the unit TODAY, I will spend $265 less to restore my simple UPS than to replace it. Them are today dollars!
The savings is interesting on even a low cost system like the APC Smart UPS 1000. But the larger units have a much larger dollar savings as the replacement cost of the unit increases faster than the cost to restore your existing larger system.
