I have taught flute for over 30 years, and I have a masters degree in flute performance. Many of my students have come to their lessons with a flute that they have gotten a "bargain" on, only to find out that the repairs needed to make it play correctly would cost more than the flute originally did.
That's when I began to search high and low, looking at many used flutes in order to find one gem. On average, I look at and play about 20 flutes to find one that is quality enough to sell. Then I have it adjusted/repaired as needed by my trusted repairman so that by the time it is sold it is as "new" as a used flute can get.
Avoid expensive repairs! Did you know that it costs well over $100 to get a flute completely re-padded if you happen to buy one with worn-out pads (more for an open-hole flute)? Here, where I live, a re-pad job done correctly starts at $350 (!)(it is a tedious job when done right). With few acceptions, the majority of the flutes I sell have pads that are in excellent condition. If one or two pads are worn a bit but don't need to be changed yet, I will say so.
Each flute is play-tested by me before being sold. I will not sell a flute unless the pads have plenty of life left in them, and it plays with ease in all registers. Know what you're getting!
