How Long Will My Hard Drive Last?

I've had a laptop for over 4 years now and I'm wondering how long my hard drive will last? Do hard drives eventually just "die"? My laptop is basically a desktop for me so I don't really use it as a portable computer. So are there any warning signs that I should be aware of before my hard drive just dies?

I have hard drives from the late 90’s that still work and I have had family members buy some last year and already had to replace them. They typically last as long as you take good care of them unless they have some factory defect or don’t have a surge protector/ups setup.

It’s just like any other piece of hardware...a simple shock from your finger tip could fry it, but it could also survive getting shocked by a cattle prod.

Today’s hard drives are faster, store more information, and are more reliable than ever before, but just like any other electronic devices, they have the possibility of failing.

Current hard drives are designed to run non-stop for years and have warranties that range from one to five years, but that is of little comfort if a six-month-old drive full of your family photos, address books, or financial information fails and you don’t have a current backup.

Some warning signs:
Drive clicks or sounds louder than normal when doing lots of reading/writing.

You receive disk corruption errors.
Computer won’t boot because of missing or corrupted system files.

Laptop hard drives are generally less reliable than full size hard drives. You should definitely make sure you have a backup of everything.

If you hear clicking coming from the hard drive, back up your data ASAP.
