I eat a high fiber diet. After suffering a ruptured colon,
temporary colostomy at 29 and the lifelong diagnosis of advanced
diverticula and irritable bowel syndrome, I need to eat a high fiber
diet. Most doctors will say that Americans do not eat enough fiber.
With the advent of processed foods and extra preservatives, it can be
hard to get the recommended 25 to 50 grams a fiber a day.Whether
you are like me or you just want to feed your family more healthy foods,
a great way to add extra fiber to your diet is to make your own
fiber-rich bread. Traditional bread making can take hours. You have to
buy the right flours and ingredients, add the right temperature yeast
at the right time, and bake the bread.If you don't want to spend
hours in your kitchen with a thermometer waiting for yeast to get to the
right temperature, you can still make your own bread with a bread
maker. Many home bread machines bake a 2-lb. loaf of bread which is
just right for a family of four to eat a loaf or two of bread each week.
If you set the timer on your bread machine, you can put the
ingredients in as you head off to work or to bed, and have warm bread
waiting for you when you return to the kitchen.A wide variety of
bread mixes are available at local grocery stores. Generally whole
grain and wheat varieties will offer more fiber, but make sure to check
the labels. One of my favorite tricks is to buy the tasteless fiber
powders from the laxative aisle and add in one or two scoops to the mix.
By adding a fiber powder, you can increase the fiber of the bread by 5
grams depending on the powder, which is a fifth of the daily fiber
recommendation!And, you can add fiber to other meal options too.
The right kind of bread machine can also make fresh fruit jams, cakes,
or meatloaf. Fiber powder can also be added to jam, cakes and meatloaf
for additional fiber. Your family will eat delicious meals without
tasting the added fiber benefit. And, it's as easy as adding the
ingredients, setting the controls and turning on the timer.Adding
fiber to your diet doesn't have to be a difficult or arduous process.
By incorporating tasty items you make at home, you can easily put more
fiber-rich foods on the table. And, with the versatility of a good home
