Used Fishing Rods
Used fishing rods can be a great buy for the budget conscious angler. A good rod can be bought for half or less the new cost

If you are looking for a fishing rod no matter what kind it is, you can save a lot of money by buying a used rod. You need to know just what kind of rod you want and what your top price is. In general you should expect to pay about half the new price for a good used rod.
A smart shopper, knowing what he/she wants, can find a great deal by looking for a suitable rod to show up at a garage sale. A very good place to buy is online auctions, particularly eBay. Listed on eBay there is a large ever varying supply of fishing rods and good tackle, which you bid on daily. One word of caution--do not allow yourself get caught up in the excitement and end up by paying too much. You will find it easy to keep sending in another bid to top other bidders and very quickly you will be bidding over your limit. Be wise and set your price right at the start and don,t be tempted to go higher. More suitable items will come along on eBay very quickly. If you are searching for a popular type of rod this is even more true.
Should you be looking for an old collectible fishing rod these are more difficult to buy. Collectible rods made by top makers such as the great Hardy Bros of England can be expensive. A Hardy Bros split bamboo rod will commonly sells for anywhere from $150 to hundreds of dollars according to its scarcity and the condition it is in. Many anglers as well as collectors like split bamboo rods and even rods made by lesser known makers will often sell for $75 to $150 dollars.
Early rods made from greenheart wood were lower priced at the time of manufacture and these rods were popular with anglers who could not pay the higher price of a split bamboo rod. If a greenheart rod is in good condtion it will still be servicable and can be acquired for about half the going price for a split cane rod. Fibreglass rods became available in the 1960s and were quickly recognised as very good rods, which cost less than split cane. The fibreglass rod in fact soon took over the market. Many excellent older fibrerglass rods are still around at the present time and can be purchased very cheaply. Fiberglass rods are strong and tough but are heavier compared to later rods. A fibreglass rod may be an excellent buy for the angler who is seeking a low price for a good tough usable rod. Early rods were made from solid fibreglass and later rods are hollow and considerably lighter in weight.
Following the fibre glass rod was the development of graphite rods of the present day. These excellent rods are known for their light weight, maximum flexibility and fine action. Anyone who is looking for the very best rod for most fishing purposes is advised to go for a graphite rod. Used graphite rods can be an excellent buy and they show up on the market in considerable numbers. A good used graphite rod can be acquired for around half or less the new cost. Whatever your taste in fishing rods is you will undoubtedly find a good buy in a used rod if you shop with care.
