In the face of current issues and natural disasters around the world, travelers interested in vacationing outside of the U.S. face a number of security issues that were not in issue in the past. Southwest Travel Club would like to help you become more informed as to how to be more prepared while traveling abroad. Knowledge is power and with Southwest Travel Club as your travel partner, you can be secure in the knowledge that you have the most up to date information on traveling outside of the U.S. on your next vacation. Southwest Travel Club on Crossing U.S. Borders If you are traveling across U.S. borders, your residency status in the U.S. affects what you need to have in order to enter and exit the country. Southwest Travel Club would like to help you become more informed and better prepared in order to enter and exit smoothly. What you need to provide is divided by your residency status into four main categories, they are: U.S. Citizens Lawful Permanent Residents Citizens from Other Countries Trusted Traveler Programs Learn more about each of these categories with Southwest Travel Club. U.S. Citizens If you are a citizen of the United States, depending on your mode of travel, the documents you need to provide while coming in and out of the country vary. If situations of air travel, all U.S. Citizens including children must present a passport or other approved document when entering the U.S. Other approved forms of identification include NEXUS kiosks, U.S. Military ID with orders or a U.S. Mariner document. If traveling by land or sea into the U.S., citizens must present documents which are approved by the WHTI or Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative which include passport or passport card, trusted traveler card or enhanced drivers license. Lawful Permanent Residents If you are a lawful permanent resident, air travel into the U.S. Is similar to other citizens of the United States in that you need to provide a passport or other approved secure documentation. If traveling by land or sea, lawful permanent residents are currently still permitted to present their Form I-551, or permanent resident card. Citizens from Other Countries If you are an international resident, regardless of your country of origin must present a passport or other approved security document when traveling by air. Rules of non U.S. Passports and travel procedures can be found further on the Department of Homeland Security website. For land and sea travel, what is required is dependent on where you are coming to the U.S. from. Canadians, Bermudians and Mexican Citizens have specific rules including what is necessary for entry. Generally, if you are a citizen from one of these three countries, you must present a document that is approved by the WHTI. All other countries should visit the Department of Homeland Security website for further information. Trusted Travel Programs Those who are in the trusted travel programs are provided with expedited travel. Travelers who fit into this category and are found as a low risk can more quickly and easily enter the U.S. Cards approved by this program include NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST, AND Global Entry.
