Calorie counting versus calorie shifting is a hot topic among the diet conscious today. The fact is that both methods; when closely followed; will produce good results.
Any successful diet yields success because it accomplishes one thing: we burn more calories than we consume.
No diet will work without achieving that goal.
So what are some of the strengths and weaknesses of calorie counting versus calorie shifting?
Calorie counting weaknesses:
1) You really must have a lot of will power to succeed with these.
2) They are generally very restrictive concerning the foods we are allowed to eat.
3) They are hard to follow; especially when dining out.
4) They often leave you feeling hungry or unsatisfied.
5) They do not allow for the body's natural reaction to dieting...a metabolic slowdown.
Calorie counting strengths:
1) They offer slow but steady results when closely followed.
2) They encourage exercise to offset the metabolic slowdown caused by the diet itself.
Calorie shifting weaknesses:
1) You must learn to eat more often to fuel the metabolism.
2) You must learn to alternate the types of food you eat at each meal.
3) You must alternate the times at which you eat certain types of foods.
4) They do not by their nature encourage exercise.
Calorie shifting strengths:
1) They require less will power.
2) They are less restrictive concerning the foods we are allowed to eat.
3) They are easier to follow; even when dining out.
4) You rarely feel hungry or dissatisfied.
5) They are structured to offset the metabolic slowdown that occurs when dieting.
6) They generally offer faster; measurable results.
Clearly; different methods appeal to different people; and which ever method works best for any individual is the "right" method for them.
But what is most important is not how fast you can lose weight; but whether or not you can stick with a program and keep the weight off for the long term.
Calorie counting versus calorie shifting is really a matter of which method is easier to follow for the long term. Looking at the pros and cons of each method; and based upon my own personal results; I submit that calorie shifting wins the debate between calorie counting versus calorie shifting.
