1805 mintage is just 211,722 for all types. Great looking Extremely Fine or better specimen with nearly detail pleasing surfaces, and nice color! Date, stars, "LIBERTY", hair detail, full bust line, motto (ALL letters show partially to full), legend, and clouds/stars are just about fully detailed. Crossbars and stripes of the shield are virtually complete (small areas of weakness at the top of the crossbars and a small area of stripe 4. The feather detail on the eagle is COMPLETE, and the arrows, leaves and berries are all distinct. There are just a few small scattered marks on either side commensurate for the grade, and none of them are significant! There are just one or two small rim ticks on either side that are not significant nor do they detract in any way. Uniform medium gray color on both sides with barely a trace of hairlines and no signs of any cleaning! forming ot at the rims. This coin has EXCELLENT eye appeal

A tremendous example of a Early Draped Bust half. Among the rarest of all US coinage Draped Bust half's are very elusive epically untouched original specimens. This coin is "Cherry" Totally original with excellent detail a very high end coin CAC approved for total originality and quality. From a tiny mintage of only 29,890 it is third only behind the 1794 @ 23,464 and the 1796 @ 3,918 a golden opportunity without breaking the bank!!! Lovely soft Pewter patina completely free of any abrasions

Attribution: Overton Variety 101, Rarity 3 (SCARCE, 201-500 specimens are estimated to exist in ALL Grades). This is one of only two Overton varieties for 1801; the entire mintage of 30,289 pieces was completed using a single obverse die and two reverse dies! The 1801 O-102 variety is very scarce and considerably more expensive.

Key Diagnostics: Pretty simply to distinguish between the two varieties: On this coin, a O-101 variety, the base of the first ?A? of ?AMERICA? is does not touch the wing feathers (see Gallery image); on the O-102, the ?A? is embedded into the feathers. Starsd 1 and 13 are very close to the hair curl and bust, respectively ( see two enlarged images), and there are also several die lumps that aid in identifying the O-101 (seen on two additional enlarged images).

Grade Opinion: Very Fine

Strong Points: Date, stars, ?LIBERTY?, ear, eye, mouth, major hair detail and a nice amount of fine detail, legend, arrows, leaves and berries, are distinct. Lines of the crossbars of the shield are about 80% complete; stripe lines are about 50% complete and not sharp. About 30% the eagle's feathers show some degree of detail. Stars are all visible

Not as Strong: No milling on the obverse and weak milling on the reverse. Hair at the back of the head is nearly worn smooth. Bust line is only visible at the breasts. Motto is incomplete; ?IBUS? of ?PLURIBUS? shows weakly and all letters of ?UNUM? can be seen, though ?UN? is weak. Only parts of a few tail letters are visible.

Surface Characteristics: Surfaces are very pleasing. The coin has some small ticks and small fine scratches from circulation that are to be expected. The most prominent one on the obverse is a small, old tick to the left of star 12; on the reverse, a few small ticks beneath the left side wing. A couple of old, fine scratches across the neck curls and in the field with the stars. Rims are excellent, with just one or two miniscule ticks on either side mentioned for completeness.

Color/Patina: Coin has a medium dark gray patina in the fields, with the raised devices a bit lighter. Surfaces look quite original with NO signs of cleaning and just a few extremely fine hairlines from handling. A very attractive coin!

Eye Appeal Opinion: Excellent eye appeal for this early, scarce date! Nice mid-range grade detail, problem-free surfaces, and very pleasing color and appearance. It is a ?must have? for any date collection of Draped Bust Half Dollars and would look great in yours
