Click title/picture for details. offer US $29.95 The COMMERCIAL BANK OF COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA was only One Year Old when it issued this $5.00 banknote in December of 1832. Chartered in 1831 with a capital of $800,000, this bank was to operate until 1865, when it ceased operation due to the occupation of the agressors from the north. (The Haxby book says this bank existed during the period 1832-1854, but the Sheheen reference on "SOUTH CAROLINA OBSOLETE NOTES AND SCRIP" gives dates of 1831-1865) This note has obviously seen some wear, having been around for 177 YEARS, but is still basically "ALL THERE", looks OK, and has a really neat Bank Validation Stamp, "COMMERCIAL BANK 1840 COLUMBIA". We occasionally see these old notes with "Private Banker" stamps on them, but this is one of a VERY VERY FEW with the stamp from the issuing bank affixed. QUITE UNUSUAL and Neat!
