Nespresso has developed a unique extraction system specially adapted to capsules. It controls every vital setting when preparing a perfect espresso. Nespresso machines have been designed with renowned partners and designers, and bring out the taste and aromas of coffee by combining quality of design with ease of use. The Nespresso Concept Automatic D290 Machine is part of our Concept Line, which features a modern, and practical design. The machine deploys technology essential for preparing an outstanding Espresso, and is exceptionally easy to use: Automatic control of the amount of coffee in the cup. A high pressure pump (19 bars) extracts all the aromas and develops a smooth crema in the cup. A thermobloc which heats water to 187°and 196° during extraction and empties the remaining water after each use so that the water is fresh for each preparation. A simple system which perforates the capsule and soaks all the ground coffee to optimally filter the coffee. A functional Jaw system, which allows for easy coffee preparation. Automatic ejection of used capsule. Removable water container (34-ounce). Tray for used capsules. Back-lit control button

"Great espresso machine, slightly overpriced!" 2009-09-24 By Hebah Hefzy (Birmingham, MI) I bought this 2 weeks ago and am now drinking 2 cups of espresso a day. I love the automatic features but find the tablets to be a bit wasteful - 55 c per tablet > $1.10/day on espresso not including the shipping costs. Also, the machine is very noisy when it cools down, the first few times I was worried it was malfunctioning! Also, the temperature of the steamed milk is a bit cool for my taste and I end up microwaving my latte's for 30 secs before I drink them!

All in all, nice looking machine, small, low maintenance and the customer service at nespresso are great.
"Changed the way I drink coffee" 2009-09-07 By T. Root (Ann Arbor, MI United States) As a person who has to have their coffee everyday, I had all my favorite spots. Having a preference for espresso based drinks, I even dabbled in homebrewing (Bialetti Mukka). Then I visited some friends who live in Switzerland (home of Nestle Nespresso SA) and fell in love with the system. The machine is easy to use (buy the D290 so you don't have to mess around with a different machine to steam milk). The capsules are clean and convenient. The coffee is great. I order the capsules online from the Nespresso web site and aside from the cheesy music on the home page :-) I have never had any trouble. While my total cost to caffeinate has decreased I think I'm actually drinking more coffee. Hope you enjoy yours.
"First-timer" 2009-06-16 By C. Johnson (Denver, CO) This is the first espresso machine I've owned and so far I am not a bit disappointed. I'm glad I did my homework before the purchase and appreciate all the previous reviews.

Likes:

- Size. Since I do not have a lot of counter space.

- Ease of use. Clean up is a breeze, especially important in the mornings.

- Taste. Although I am not the connoisseur that some other reviewers are, I'm very pleased.

- Capsules. So easy and convenient. I haven't even decided on a favorite...I'm just thankful to be making it in my own kitchen!

- Noise level. I can't believe anyone would be complaining that this machine is loud. It sounds like an espresso machine!

Could be better:

- Exclusivity. Would love to be able to purchase the capsules from a store shelf instead of ordering, although shipping is quite fast.

- Cup height. I am not actually an espresso drinker, rather lattes and cappuccinos. Would love to be able to fit a travelers mug underneath. As is, I just use the espresso cup and pour into my larger mug.

- Instructions. Thank goodness for YouTube videos and other posted instructions.

Tips:

- Take a minute to admire the auto-frother, then disconnect and store/throw it away. Any complaints about cold/luke-warm coffee must be due to this piece. The regular steamer works perfectly on its own. I sink it well into the non-fat milk (my preference) and it steams/froths and heats the milk to 150 degrees in 30-45 seconds or so. If it's not inserted deep enough, the froth overflows before the milk is heated enough.

- Cappuccino: 1/3 espresso, 1/3 steamed milk, 1/3 froth

- Latte: 1/3 espresso, 2/3 steamed milk, thin layer of foam (I'm sure both of these recipes are arguable, so just do your own Googling.)

- No offense to Amazon, especially since they offer free shipping, but it seems this product is well in demand and rarely goes on sale, if ever. I discovered I could have purchased it at my local Williams-Sonoma for the same price. Which would only be beneficial if I needed to return it, which I haven't. And if I did, it sounds like Nespresso makes that task easy enough and at no cost.
"Ideal if you don't have a sink....Fast, Easy, Clean & Tidy " 2009-05-27 By Y. R. Wu (Ann Arbor Michigan) Besides being super easy to use, the biggest advantage I see is that you do not need a sink or water hookup for this to work.

Our nearest sink is at least a hundred yards away - no problem! You fill the reservoir once in the morning and you are good to go. The capsules after use are dry and all the grounds are self contained.

As other have mentioned, the capsules are not cheap, but this isn't Folgers, the coffee /espresso this makes is as good if not better than Starbucks...
"One Fantastic Nespresso Machine" 2009-05-18 By GMo My experience so far has been fantastic. I bought the D290 on my first foray into the auto espresso world. I'd owned a Bialetti espresso maker but hated a number of things about it. My foremost gripe was the cleaning between "doses" of espresso. After each use, you'd have to break it apart, clean it and get it ready for use again. I figured there had to be something easier. And in walked the Nespresso. After two full weeks with the product I can honestly say it's fantastic. It makes great espresso for me and wonderful lattes for my wife. Use is a snap - it only takes about 20 seconds to get the heat up to make espresso. And it only takes 30 or so seconds to switch it into steam mode. Clean up is a snap - lift the cap to toss the pod into the bin and you're done. All in all, I am VERY happy with this product. As an aside - I've placed two orders with nespresso.com. Both shipped the same day I ordered them and arrived two days later. You can't beat the convenience.
