How To Put Backspin On The Ball
Many factors must be considered when trying to put spin on your wedge shots. What kind of lie do you have? Which direction is the wind blowing? What kind of golf ball are you playing? Are the greens soft or hard? Do your wedges promote spin? All these factors have an influence on how much spin you can put on yourwedge shots.
The Effects of Lie- In order to put the greatest amount of spin on the golf ball, the golf ball must be sitting up and lying cleanly, with little or no grass behind it. This promotes a greater amount of friction between the clubface and the ball, which allows for a greater amount of spin. If the golf ball is sitting down in tall grass, then it is difficult to put spin on the ball because less of the ball surface is exposed to the face of the club. The amount of friction between the clubface and the ball is greatly reduced by the blades of grass and as a result there will be little spin on the ball.
Mother Nature & Course Conditions- The conditions of the golf course have a major effect on how much spin you can put on the ball. The type of grass in the fairway is one of those conditions. You can put more spin on shots hit from Zoysia grass than Bermuda grass because the ball will sit up better. Also, the direction the wind is blowing affects the amount of spin. If the wind is blowing behind you towards the target, the ball will spin less than if the wind is in yourface. Also, the condition of the greens has an effect on the amount the ball will spin. The ball will spin more on soft, fast greens than on firm or slow greens.
The Effect of Your Equipment- The type of golf ball used has a major effect on the amount of spin as well. A ball with a hard cover and a hard core will not spin as much as a ball with a soft cover and a softer core. The face of your wedges also affects the amount of spin. A wedge that has a rough face that can create more friction will spin the ball more.

Your Technique- First, address the ball with more of your weight on your front foot (the foot closest to the target) and with an open stance. The ball position should be in the middle or closer to the back of your stance and your hands should be ahead of the ball.
On the backswing, keep your weight on the front foot and your upper body toward the target. As you swing the club back, take it on an upright path to promote a downward striking of the ball. Remember to keep your body still to the top while keeping your arms and hands in front of your body.
At impact, make sure your hands are in front of the ball, the shaft is angled toward the target, and your right knee is driving toward the target. The hands staying in front allows you to strike down on the golf ball, hitting the ball first and then the ground. Driving the knee towards the target means that you are turning your hips through impact. The trailing arm should not roll over the leading arm, meaning you should not release the club. Instead, rotate your entire body through the shot to promote good acceleration and a maintained clubhead speed. To hit a shot with spin, do not decelerate or slow your clubhead speed. This will only make it more difficult to consistently hit a good clean, crisp shot.
To practice your technique, take slow swings in front of a mirror to check that you are making the correct moves. You can also check yourself by setting up a video camera or using a practice session at your local driving range. After you are comfortable with the correct technique, find a short game practice area where you can hit shots into a green to get more comfortable with hitting these shots on the golf course.
