Just recently I stumbled across an online course that claimed to show people how to make a living just playing games all day.
As an avid gamer I was definitely interested, so I checked out the course and thought I’d share my experiences with you.
Firstly, this course is 100% legit. It teaches you the “real-world” strategies to become a video game tester. The types of things that are going to get you working with top companies like EA and Blizzard. (Think beta testing with pay.)
The eCourse comes packaged as a downloadable PDF report. It won’t give you any sort of college-style qualifications, but it will give you the information you need to head in the right direction and secure yourself a position playing games for a living.
Here’s a brief outline of what the course contains:
Part 1
This serves as a basic introduction to the whole course. It starts out by busting the myths you might have heard about game testing, then answers some frequently asked questions about the job.
Part 2
This part explains what game testers actually do, and what the job involves. Again, this part mainly serves to get you up to speed and understanding the whole process of game testing.
Part 3
Here’s where the course starts to take off, showing you exactly what you need to do to become a game tester. It explains everything from formal qualifications (like what college degrees are recommended), to the extra skills you need to develop (which come in especially handy if you have never been to college).
Part 4
This part of the course explains that having experience in the video game industry is one of the most important aspects of getting a testing job. It then shows you 7 great ways that you can get experience specifically related to game testing (many that I would never have thought of myself).
Part 5
To finish, the course moves on to show you exactly how to find and apply for a game testing position. It really does a great job detailing all the steps so that you can give yourself the best possible chance of landing a testing job.
Overall the course does a great job of showing you how to become a game tester. However, there are a few small things to note.
Firstly, the whole thing is pretty short. But still, it’s packed full of solid information with almost no filler, so you’ll want to read everything a few times to make sure you didn’t miss anything.
Secondly, many things in the report only apply if you are over 18 years of age. While it still provides plenty of alternative things you can do if you are under-age, it’s worth noting that if you’re not 18, then you probably aren’t going to get a game testing position immediately after reading this course.
And finally, if there’s one real negative to this course, it’s that it actually does require you to put in some effort. The course gives you the knowledge and skills to guide you in the right direction, but it’s up to you to take action.
