The best halIron Man CostumesGood vacation practices : strangers smiling at one another, countrywide Lampoon?s Xmas holiday, little kids ripping into presents and Salvation Army bell ringers So help me God, if I hear the Muppets singing The twelve Days of Xmas another time, I?m going to go postal. Seriously. Forget all that eggnog, candy cane and fruitcake business. Around here the vacations are marked by chicken salad sandwiches, pimento cheese on Ritz crackers and generic lemon-lime soda. unfortunately, this year, the table will be missing all of my favourite Christmas goodies. These treasured yearly delicacies have, for my complete life, been prepared by the loving hands of my paternal gramps. In Sep, grandma Engel reached her 90-year milestone. While she may not have been prepared to challenge in an Ironman Triathlon, she was still able to live independently in the house where she?d originally started making chicken salad sandwiches for me. One month after her birthday strike, grandmama suffered a ?bad spell.? Translation? Congestive cardiac arrest. After a short stay in the hospital, and numerous conferences with doctors, we had to face the inevitable : Grandma was far too feeble to continue living on her own. As tough as the decision was, we had to do the best thing for granny ; get her the observation and care that will only be provided by a care home. My Grandmother?s declining health is only one of the sad, inevitable parts of life. However [*COMMA] this change is worsened by the halt of many of our long-time and beloved Christmas Eve traditions. I?m sure you can think about times where the vacations were impacted by any amount of factors : death, divorce, a job transfer, inclement weather that kept a relation away, army service. There are plenty of reasons one could look around the breakfast table on Christmas morning and see an empty chair. It?s no wonder that, for some, the vacations are one of the most depressing times of year. Still, as I thought about all the years when it appeared like friends were absent, I kept coming up with just as many positive additions ; my sister?s marriage to my brother-in-law, Jim, the return of my fave aunt and uncle to the mid-west and, best of all, Xmas 2001 when my first niece, Lauren, joined the planet. Now, at age 4, she?s the perfect age to get happy about a visit from an oversized elf who slides down a non-existent chimney! And, since a little sister has joined her, there's always something new to see as they grow and grown up. With family and the vacations, it seems even more true. Knowing that we are destined to have people move in and out of our lives, this vacation season, take some time to appreciate those around you for who they are, their special gifts, gifts and personalities, and be cheerful while you have this time with them. No one knows what the subsequent year may bring, so take a second to realize just how rich life can be with those you love. it's been claimed the only consistent is change.
