This classic example of Renaissance Revival architecture was constructed in 1902 by master builder John Young of the finest materials, including tile roof, copper gutters, and brick walls with limestone base. Set on a bluff, 200 feet above the Mississippi River just above the dam and hydroelectric plant at Keokuk, Iowa, the home was designed to take full advantage of the dramatic river views from almost every room. The property extends all the way down the thickly wooded hillside toward the river and is located near the crest of the hill on Keokuk’s famous Grand Avenue, which boasts an impressive collection of stately turn-of-the-century homes. The entire neighborhood was designated a National Historic District in 2003.
After climbing the white stone steps to the large covered front porch with limestone columns, you pass through the impressive carved doorway into a small elegant entry with tiled floor and elaborate original quarter-sawn oak moldings. Immediately to your right is the half bath with reproduction antique vanity, marble counter, brass sink and marble floor. To your left is the impressive grand entry with the original stairway, cut glass windows and exquisite detailing in the moldings. The stairway and trim are all original quarter-sawn oak. The floor is tiger wood with an elaborate border inlay and center medallion of a variety of exotic woods.
Immediately behind the stairway are the formal living and music rooms with built-in bookcases, bay window overlooking the Mississippi, window seat, original quarter-sawn oaks floors and an intricately carved stone mantel surrounding the wood-burning fireplace. Adjacent to the fireplace is the door leading to the large covered side porch that wraps around the back of the house and extends toward the back hillside offering incredible river views. To your right along the back of the house is the large dining room with quarter-sawn oak flooring and large picture window overlooking the Mississippi.
Further to your right is the modern butler’s pantry and kitchen with extensive oak cabinetry, full pantry, solid surface countertops and tile floor. The kitchen feagtures built-in microwave and top-of-the-line dishwasher, double sink, large Maytag refrigerator and a fabulous Thermadore double oven with gas cook top and built-in gas grill, warming lights and exhaust fan. The kitchen is open to the newly added family room with picture windows overlooking the Mississippi on two sides, offering dramatic views 10 miles upstream to the edge of Nauvoo, Illinois and downstream to the nearby historic and impressive lock, dam and powerhouse. A side entry offers convenient access from the driveway to the family room and kitchen. The family room features exposed brick and limestone, oak hardwood flooring, beautiful wide oak moldings and double doors leading to a deck overlooking the backyard and river.
At the top of main staircase is a large hall extending the width of the home with refinished original hardwood flooring, enormous built-in oak bookcases and exposed period elevator that operates between the first and second floors. To the left is the library with extensive oak built-in cabinets, desk and an entire wall of bookcases. Straight ahead along the rear of the home with windows overlooking the Mississippi is the oversized master suite with electronic (remote-controlled) gas fireplace, beautiful period mantel, large walk-in closet and full luxury bath that has just been completed, featuring extensive marble, oversized glass shower and Jacuzzi tub, dual vanities, and spectacular views of the Mississippi from two large windows.
Turning right from the top of the stairs along the back of the house is another bedroom suite with river view, electronic gas fireplace and full bath with original tile, built-ins and shower.
Opposite this second bedroom are back stairs leading down to the kitchen and the stairs to the third floor. At the top of the third floor stairs is an open game room. To the left is a long hallway offering access to four additional rooms: a full bath with claw foot tub, separate shower, high-end pedestal sink and marble floors; two good-sized bedrooms with large dormer windows, and a small toy room with built-in chest of drawers.
From the kitchen, stairs lead down to the newly finished basement with exposed limestone walls. Under the main part of the house, the full basement offers lots of windows and includes a second family/recreation/home theater room, large bedroom with window to the backyard, new bath with top-of-the line fixtures and elaborate tile work reminiscent of the turn of the century, an enormous laundry and a large unfinished storage room. Under the family room addition are another large bedroom with windows on three sides and an attached bath with similar fixtures and tile.
In summary, this one-of-a-kind residence offers the perfect blend of historic elegance and modern convenience with space for every conceivable need, including six bedrooms plus a library (possible seventh bedroom with closet); five and a half baths; three working fireplaces; formal living, music and dining rooms; first floor family room, third floor game room and basement recreation room (or home theater); an abundance of closets, built-ins and storage and even an elevator.
The home has undergone two major renovations in the recent past. During the 1990’s the serious structural work was undertaken. Electric and plumbing were replaced, the entire brick exterior was sandblasted and tuck pointed, new two-zone electric central air conditioning and forced air gas heating systems were installed, new windows added throughout, the kitchen and baths were redone with new cabinets, countertops, fixtures, appliances, etc., the built-in cabinetry was added in the library, and reproduction period lighting was installed throughout the main living areas.
In 2002, a small screened porch was removed and the kitchen was opened up into the new family room and adjoining side porch. The basement was finished for the first time and the new bedroom/bath area was added under the family room addition. Floors were upgraded: the living room, music room, dining room, main staircase and upstairs hall had carpet removed and the original hardwood flooring restored, vinyl was replaced with marble in the half bath and tile in the kitchen. Also the tiger wood and inlaid floor was added at the base of the main staircase. The large floor-to-ceiling oak bookcases were added in the second floor hall and library.
